Today, I bought a live lobster to have for dinner. When my four year old daughter discovered it in the cooler, she thanked me incessantly for finally getting her a pet. She now won't let "Mr. Shelly" out of her sight. FML

After maxing out our credit card on a salt water tank, Mr. Shelly has a permanent home here with Megan, Tony, and Ansleigh Magee.

That is adorable. It sucks...but it's adorable

"What's for dinner mommy?" *holds up knife and smiles* "Mr. Shelly."

my dad did the same thing to me when I was about 5 I named him Larry. He still proceeded to cook him by dropping him into tge pot telling me "say goodbye to Larry" and ate him infront of me. he still finds this story hilarious and I at 25 years old am still horrified by lobsters..

It doesn't make sense for a little girl to have a pet that can break her fingers. You should have explained to her that lobsters don't make good pets and you were going to take it back to the pet shop but how would she like a cat/puppy As its is now the only answer is to say it 'escaped' and why don't you all go down the pet shop......etc. Or keep it where she can't get clawed. Be careful - my dad gave my dog away at 12 and I took years to forgive him.

I was thinking of a goldfish as a starter pet. Sorry about your dog, jd :(

Yikes, my mother gave away my cat when I was 13. It was the cat my deceased grandmother gave me right before she passed the month before. Then again, my mom was a bitch and I never have forgiven her for being abusive. I agree a goldfish is a good starter pet. However, if she likes lobsters/crabs, why not get her a hermit crab? They make great pets for kids.

Lobsters are friends not food (:

Honestly, just have it for dinner. Little kids are going to find out about dying animal for food either way. You should talk to her about it, and not let her find out that cows/piggies die for food from someone else other than parents. It can really affect her differently if it comes from someone else.

YDI for buying a lobster just to eat it. Poor thing. :( Yeah I'm terrible, I'm an animal lover who can't live off salads and rabbit cuisine (but I hate sea food). I remember when I always saw lobsters in tanks at the grocery store; I'd just watch them, and feel sad that someone would come along and buy them only to murder them for one (nasty) meal. So next time, don't buy a live lobster, or live anything, if you intend to cook it. Trust me, it won't go over well for anyone.

What difference does it make if I buy a lobster to eat and someone else has killed it or if I kill it? Either way the lobster dies. You can't preserve raw dead lobster for very long. That's why they're sold live so that they stay fresh. Otherwise they have to be sold already cooked, and reheated lobster just isn't as good as freshly cooked lobster.

Buying animals for food doesn't always end up bad, but it has potential to if you have a young child. Also, just because you don't like seafood, doesn't make it pointless and "nasty" meal. I'm happy the OP let her child keep her lobster as a pet. All animals die before they become our food, but not all food we cook is alive when we bring it home. Lastly, pre-cooked crab and lobster isn't the same. Which is why it's so common for them to be the animal that modern people kill themselves. (P.s) Food isn't murder. But killing someone pet could be seen as heinous as murder. Which is why it's so sweet OP didn't kill the child's newest love. (P.p.s) OP, if you decide the lobster isn't a good pet for your little one, give it to a friend for their dinner, and get your kiddo a puppy/kitten. Sad to say your lobster fests are going to be gone for awhile.

Lobster has to be cooked live other wise it's toxic

Right?! I don't like sea food either and I think its inhumane how people just kill them by putting them in pots of boiling water. A cruel way to die for any animal or person.

The reason why you should keep lobsters alive prior to cooking is because lobsters meat goes bad very quickly and will release self-digestive fluids that can spoil the meat.

I guess you could say he was Living Like Larry XD

O boy... I'm sorry, but you are so ******!!

Haha I know my sister did this too. It happens to just about every four year old I know. You gotta have the where does my food come from talk... Your four year old may even become a vegetarian after (I know I did and survived just fine). Although perhaps if you spring for the "cruelty free" packaging the kid will most likely suck it up in a week once you cook a hotdog.
