Take all the precautions you want, those things are dangerous and out to get you. FACT.
Because the power of literacy would've repelled the air-refresher's evil spray.
Every box has directions as do the refills. They all say face the freshener away from yourself when you activate it. Own fault
That's why they tell to aim it away from yourself, logic would also indicate doing so knowing that it's an automatic sprayer and it could automatically go off once the batteries are in... that or checking for an off switch and making sure it's off so it doesn't spray (but since they don't seem to come with on/off switches it would seem logical to just aim the thing away from your face).
Those damn things scare me sometimes it sounds like a snake in my house.
