Today, I bought one of my favorite albums from when I was growing up. When I looked at the liner notes, I learned that my favorite song on the album wasn't about taking a bath, but about going to a brothel. My second-favorite isn't about moving, but about suicide. My childhood just shattered. FML

it's funny how things are different when were older hey. like the play school song :|

Since the username says “nilssonfan”, I’m gonna guess she means “Bath” and “Without You” by Harry Nilsson.

Hmm... Like Hotel California? That's a fabulous song about a ***** house.

hotel California is not about a ***** house, the song is a metaphor for drug addiction actually.

It's not about a drug addiction, it's about the underbelly of the American dream. It's about a luxury hotel in California where they do all kinds of things that defy what they are. Drinking, drugs, sex.

24 got the first part right. But The Eagles have constantly said that it's not actually about a real hotel. Just their interpretation of life in L.A. Everyone has their own meaning of a song, doesn't mean they are right.

You're right, it's not a real hotel. In the song, however, it's about the luxury hotel and all that jazz.

Ashame 0

Yeah, I posted that comment then realized you meant the actual song, not the meaning. My brother insists that they're singing about Hell.

Ha! My brother was a ***** in hotel California...

Ashame 0

My brother was a ***** in Hell!

I was told that it was about Anton LaVey's first church of Satan, founded in 1969. It was built on California Street. "You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave."

Ashame 0

I've heard that one too. I was just saying that the actual band has denied that the song is about a real place. So everyone has their own interpretation about the song's meaning, but we will never know. Which I like. If every band had to go explaining what their songs meant, it would sure kill it for me.

sourgirl101 28

Ashame, I must agree with you. I do enjoy inputting my own interpretations on songs. But I still think "The Beatle" "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about LSD even if the band denied that it was.(:

Seriously... They denied that it's not about LSD? I think that it made the song far more enjoyable to listen to.

StrongHand_ They do, don't they! Sourgirl_ I have my own interpretations about songs too. That's another reason why I like when bands don't explain their lyrics. That way they don't ruin the meaning a song already has to me. And, if "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" isn't really about LSD, it's a sad, sad day!

Becky6487 5

Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds is based on a picture one of the bandmember's kids drew, I don't know which one

sourgirl101 28

It was Julian Lennon's drawing but they must have been tripping when they saw it.(: And "Hey Jude" was about his parents splitting up.

"Hotel California" was not about a brothel...its about an insane asylum that the singer's brother had lived in. The Hotel California is in Norco, CA like 20mins from where I live, it was a hotel, then an insane asylum and now its a banquet hall since a military base has been built around it. I had a dance there in high school and they have info about it all over the walls.

Sourgirl, I'd love to know what they were tripping on when "Yellow Submarine" was written

sourgirl101 28

Stronghand, I feel that way about Pink Floyd's "The Wall" movie. I just saw Roger Waters in concert singing that album. It was trippy minus the LSD for me.(:

I think you're mixing up "House of the Rising Sun" with "Hotel California". House of the Rising Sun is definitely about a ***** house. as for the rest of this thread: It's true in every artistic medium: The artist probably had an intended vision/meaning for their work (unless they're a surrealist), but once they've made it public, the viewers have their own interpretations, and their visions are no less important than the artists intent. That's the beauty of a great work of art -- it takes on a life of its own, evoking different thoughts and emotions in each person. I think it's actually rather sad, and juvenile, when an artist tries to impost a particular meaning on their work, and dismisses the validity of any other interpretation.

sourgirl101 28

74 Wow, that's right, it is.(: Great memory! I forgot about that song. When ever I hear it, it reminds me of the movie "Casino".

#74, well said. I couldn't agree more.

sourgirl101 28

epicfails, I hope you weren't tripping on LSD(: Great show, wasn't it? I love when younger people appreciate classic rock!

...I'm still young and I was listening to hotel California when I read all this. wow I always thought it was happy "welcome to the hotel California, such a lovely place" it seems so happy

hey guys the point of music is not in what everyone thinks, its about its what it means personaliy to you and everyone can have diffrent versions of the same song, unless it just plainly obvious like the OP's :P

Since the username says “nilssonfan”, I’m gonna guess she means “Bath” and “Without You” by Harry Nilsson.

Without you and Bath from Harry Nilsson would sound like the 2 matching songs. Although "Without you" is actually a cover that was song by Nilsson. But then again it has been covered close to 200 times already.

sourgirl101 28

Damn it's like playing "Blues Clues". I'm wondering what the song is myself.(:

Good catch on the Nilsson, but I think the songs would be Bath and I Said Goodbye To Me. They're both on Aerial Ballet, and I Said Goodbye To Me does make mention of packing up/leaving things behind but is definitely about suicide.

acceptablename_ you just saved me a day of reasearch. an internet to you, sir. :3

lmao I just saw this after spending 20 minutes to research FML jk

Your favorite song on your favorite album was about taking a bath (or so you thought)? Sounds like a pretty shitty album. YDI.

things sound alot different when you're a kid.. while you're mind is still innocent. when i was a kid i watched "look who's talking" about a million times and never realized the beginning was showing sperm swimming thru a ******. i just thought they were weird little flying white things that could talk. =/

o my I love that movie yah I watched with my little bro and he called them albino tadpoles it was cutee

Music can be about dark topics. Get over it.

One of my favorite childhood songs is about war. And I even knew it back then. Don't let it consume you, OP.

Pretty sure "I'll pay $1500 for a golden shower" is just about bathing too.

I don't think it's terrible to figure these things out. I love figuring out double meanings to things that I haven't seen/heard since I was a little kid.
