Today, I broke my toe. My mom didn't think it was necessary to take me to hospital, opting to give me some painkillers instead. They were so strong that I fell asleep for an hour during my exam. FML

they won't do anything at the hospital anyway.

The doctor may have given you the same painkillers anyways. (Depending on how much of a wimp you were behaving.) Don't blame your mom, I'm sure she didn't force-feed them to you. P.S. Hospitals are for serious injuries. Walk-ins are for broken metatarsals. (Metacarpals?)

exactly ! she willingly took the pills so its more like a YDI

you almost got it right with metatarsals. metatarsals are the bones of the foot. metacarpals are the bones of the hand. the toes and fingers are phalanges. /geek and wouldn't that be a limp-in, not a walk-in?

Seriously, It's a toe. As long as it's not bent the wrong way then your much better off just dealing with it. Doctors can't do anything more than getting you the same pain killers. Really your just paying a doctor a bunch of money to tell you you broke a toe and it's going to hurt for a bit.

Yeah seriously why can't your friends take test for you while you're riding your high.

unless it's a severe break, a hospital isn't going to do anything except give you painkillers, and tape the bad toe to the good to next to it. and then charge you a ton of money.

If you broke your big toe you actually need to go to the hospital and get a cast. For the other toes you still need to see a doctor to get it properly splinted and make sure the break is clean and that there is not any other damage. Gotta love the US medical system where everyone is so afraid of the the insane fees and co-pays that they would rather risk permanent disability instead of taking proper care of themselves.

I've broken my big toe before and never got a cast. I agree about the checking to make sure it's a clean break etc. maybe OPs mom thought they were exaggerating and OPs toe wasn't really broken.

seriously? my cost for the Dr. would be $15 with my insurance, x rays and all that covered. and no, I wouldn't go to the hospital for a broken toe. there's nothin to do other than tape it to the other toe. it has nothing to do with the cost of the American medical system. people just go to the Dr for everything nowadays. "OMG I sneezed I need to go to the Dr!"

I never went anywhere near a hospital when I broke my big two and I live in a country with free healthcare. All you do is tape your toes together with some gauze inbetween and your good to go, I've broken every toe on both feet and don't have any squint toes. The only thing I have left over from the breaks is no toenails on my pinkie toes. Just remember that every time you go to the docs or hospital for something silly like this you are stopping people who are really sick or hurt getting seen.

Not everyone has insurance & I'd rather do it myself than have a doctor tell me to just ice it, tape it & go on with my day. "btw that'll be 500 + dollars." I went to the doc for a simple UTI because it prevented me from working and I paid almost 400 dollars for everything, prescripts and all so I can only imagine the bull shit I'd have to pay for a broken toe.

Permanent disability? Who the **** gets a permanent disability from something other than a big toe? For that matter, what jaggoff is so stupid as to just let a broken big toe go because, after all, who needs to be able to balance to function?

There's no point going to a doctor for even a big toe being broken. When I broke mine my doctor literally looked at it for less than two minutes and said "your toe is broken. Try not to walk on it too much." and that was it.

I mean really you must not have good enough friends that would do that!

Pain is weakness leaving the body. A failed test is weakness leaving the gene pool.

Sleeping during an exam sucks! A couple of years ago, I slept through my Microbiology final. I was fortunate enough to have one of the exam proctors come by and wake me up. I'm sorry OP, that really blows. . :(

I want to know if you passed it or not?

you don't need to go to the hospital for a broken toe. they won't do anything about it.

Well, she's right. Going to the hospital would have been a huge waste of time and money. They really can't do anything for broken toes...except give you massive doses of painkillers. I've broken and dislocated toes (and about every other bone in my foot). It's really, really not worth going to the hospital for just toes. Or taking painkillers for that matter.
