Today, I checked my bank balance, to make sure that the last installment of my funding had been paid in, and realised that I'd been overpaid by £500. So, being honest, I told my boss about this. Turns out, I wasn't overpaid by £500, I was overpaid by £1000 and need to give it all back. FML

Hi, I'm the OP and thought I'd clear this up a bit... I mean, you can't fit much into 300 characters, so I can see why this is confusing... The university keep £500 of my funding to cover the costs of my project, that's why I was never meant to get the last installment of £500 in the first place - but I didn't know that. Yeah, I probably should have just kept it to myself, but meh, I'd feel too guilty as my boss is such a nice guy.

Good decision, saved you lots of trouble later.

Well that sucks. FYL, but at least you were honest.

You did the right thing though, you could have gotten in a lot of trouble if you had used the money knowing it wasn't yours.

500£ is equivalent to $811.35 American money. 1000£ = $1622

YDI for trying to give it back. Don't you know that honest men are stomped into the ground? It's really sad that no one can be honest anymore and get recognized for it.

Not sure what's its like there, but if they overpay you it's their fault and they can't ask for their money back. That happened to me, and basically my bosses words were, "they're fault, enjoy it"

ydi for not wanting to keep the money.

No, f their life because they would've gotten in trouble for keeping the money.

They would've found out even if you hadn't told them. That's part of what accounting and book keeping is for--to catch those kinds of things. Earlier this year, the company my husband works for accidentally paid several hundred employees 80 hours of holiday pay on a paycheck, rather than 8 hours. Within 8 hours of direct deposits being made, all those employees on direct deposit had their payroll deposits reversed and received a paper check the same day. Employees who were receiving a paper check to begin with never even saw the incorrect check because it was fixed before they were issued. Don't bank on money you shouldn't have had in the first place.

Ahhh, you're too good of a person! Only the corrupt and the wicked can make it in today's morally declining world. Muahahahahahaha...

I don't know what your laws are like concerning something like that, but it was probably good that you were honest.
