Say the virus destroyed the files
To the rescue! Don't sweat it, I got you covered. You'll need to go to the dmv, legally change your name, get your passport, move to the remote mountains of Nepal and live out the rest of your days as a sheep herder. There are no other options.
Rest In Peace love
When you delete something in windows the area on the disk just gets marked as free space, the data is still there till window overwrites it. Million and one file recovery programs out there these days both free and paid. Just dot write anything to the drive you are trying to recover from or you might find yourself overwriting the "free space" that contains the photos.
Chill OP. Just use this free software called Recuva. It will recover the images and other data very easily :)
EASEUS makes a data recovery program that I use at work to recover files that have been completely erased. There is also a program called recuva from piriform that does the same thing. The EASEUS tool is better, but the piriform tool is free.
Seeing as she wasn't her own photographer, the photographer probably gave her a disk with all the photos on it.
You could show her the FML page. That would get the message across.

I sure hope she has some kind of backup...
1. Perhaps you and your mother both should learn about the magic thing that is backup (external hdd, cloud whatever) 2. I hope you didn't touch the computer after you realized this and immedediately talked to a professional, because as long as you didn't overwrite the "free storage" they might still be saved
