This happened a long time ago, but there is so much painfully incorrect advice on here. 1) Simply being uninsured does not make you at fault. Liability is based on who is at fault for causing the accident, which in some cases, there is comparable negligence. 2) If op didn't add an endorsment onto the policy forthis engine, the insurance company would NOT add the value to the value of the vehicle. To find the value, they look at vehicles that are the same year/make/model and in similar condition. They determine value based on what these vehicles are being sold for in the area the interested party resides. Under colission coverage, with his reciept, the most he could get back for the engine is $200.
Sue, OP. SUE!!
I'm sorry but putting a new $6000 engine in an old car is like grandma getting a boob job. You just shouldn't. I agree it sucks but you kind of deserve it.
To the people saying it's dumb to spend $6000 on an old car, yes, but from experience I can say I'd spend large amounts of money if it were that valuable to me, too.

:( Ugh. I'm sorry. Your insurance should cover most of it, right? This is why we need to have stricter rules in the US about drunk drivers... esp. uninsured ones!
Dude, if he doesnt have insurance that automatically means it's his fault (although it is his fault) and he has to pay for everything. But fyl until everything is taken care of.
