Today, I found out that my father, who is divorced from my mother, has set up a lawsuit against her and that I am required to go to court and testify against her as a witness. I've tried to keep neutral for six years, and I'll go to jail if I don't show up. FML

ouch. Just say you're staying neutral in the court

Despite the OP having no control over the situation, there are still YDI votes...

there's no way you'll go to jail if u dont show up for that bullshit

You may have to go there but you can say what you want to say. Though you are legally required to say the truth, if you want to lie your ass of to cover for your mom, then go for it.

why does everyone think he's lying? my parents are divorced and I have to go to court all the time

What I would do: Inform your father that you are not going to court and not taking sides. Tell him if he does not release you from your court obligation you will intentionally drag up nasty things to say about him when it comes time to testify (aka, take your mother's side). Then tell him that if your mother tries to do that, you'll do the same to her. But FYL. My family's got problems too, I know it sucks.

Tell him he can have either: a) your testimony, or b) your respect (since, clearly, him making you testify means he also doesn't you respect you).

tell your father if he makes you choose, you're going to have to choose your mother because she's not forcing you to decide on such a cruel ultimatum
