Today, I found out that my father, who is divorced from my mother, has set up a lawsuit against her and that I am required to go to court and testify against her as a witness. I've tried to keep neutral for six years, and I'll go to jail if I don't show up. FML

ouch. Just say you're staying neutral in the court

Despite the OP having no control over the situation, there are still YDI votes...

so go and dont say anything bad about your mom? not difficult? unless she really did do something horrible and illegal and in that case, its not taking sides its a matter of telling the truth.

Agree with Autumnatic completely. Do what you must do within the requirements of the law. Just remember to thank Daddy for dragging you into the thick of this, when you've expressed your wishes to both parties clearly in the past. FYL, for now.

All you have to say is that you plead the fifth and you won't go to jail but you won't go against your mom or dad so there ya go

While it's true that the 5th ammendment does not apply here, and there are not any federal laws preventing you from being compelled to testify against a non-spouse family member (that I'm aware of), that doesn't mean that there aren't state laws providing that protection. Without knowing any details of the case, I wouldn't want to comment on the probability of the judge compelling you to testify if you declare that you don't want to - it can depend on the case, and on the judge - if he does compell you and you remain silent you can face fines / jail time for contempt of court, and you should definetely show up, but if you're really against it, simply respond to all questions by stating that you were on the moon. "Where were you on July 11th, 2006" "I was on the moon" "What can you tell us about the events that took place that day in August 2002?" "I don't know, I was on the moon. With Steve." "Did you brush your teeth?" "I was on the moon" or "I don't know, I was dead at the time!"

"I was on the moon." Priceless. XD

its called the fifth amendment, plead it

You might be required to show, but you aren't required to testify. Read up on the fifth amendment. :-)

why don't you, because the 5th Amendment isn't applicable. God - even type it on Wikipedia for hell's sake!

the fifth amendment protects against SELF-incrimination. he actually can be forced to testify against someone else

Go to jail. Don't compromise on your principles. You're in the moral right anyway, I doubt you'll be in there for more than a few days.

by law the court can't make a child testify against their parents. ydi for not knowing that.
