Today, I found out that my father, who is divorced from my mother, has set up a lawsuit against her and that I am required to go to court and testify against her as a witness. I've tried to keep neutral for six years, and I'll go to jail if I don't show up. FML

ouch. Just say you're staying neutral in the court

Despite the OP having no control over the situation, there are still YDI votes...

plead the fifth then you wont have to say anything :

They can put put you in jail for contempt of court until you talk. You would need a lawyer to get yourself out of that mess. The lawyer would have to establish there really self-incriminating matter involved.

I would talk to a lawyer and find out if you are actually required. If so, personally, I would tell your dad that it's a shame his money means more to him than his child.

I smell bs from the fml. kinda like someone I know. ..

Just plead the fifth. You don't actually have to talk.

"Plead the 5th" this, "Plead the 5th" that. Stop throwing "Plead the 5th" around when it doesn't work with the situation whatsoever. Read the amendment CAREFULLY before posting your ignorant comments.

God that's so ridiculous. We have spousal immunity to keep married people from having to testify against each other...but we nothing to protect children or other family members. Stupid justice system.

Can you plead or refuse to answer the questions some other way?

Plead the 5th, OR, say its a conflict of interest.

yeah, and you're an idiot because just because you have to show up doesn't mean you have to testify. your mom's not even required to testify. you fully have the right to just keep your mouth shut.
