Pretty much cutting her hours so she won't have to be given full-time employee benefits, like employee health insurance, and the what-not, so her boss will pay less expenses.
Well, with that statement, he said they don't have grounds to fire you, so they changed you hours hoping you'd leave. That's called a "constructive lay off" in the US and is illegal. You can't legally change a person's job in order to make them leave. (e.g.. make a senior office worker do heavy-lifting work so he quits and you don't have to pay severance or benefits). Just saying. Got a lawyer in the family?
Sue them
Welcome to the real world. It sucks, doesn't it? You don't like it, get out. To everyone else thats saying "its illegal, you should sue". Lots of things are illegal in this world but people don't bother suing over them because itll cost more than its worth. Taking her company to court probably isn't worth all of the time and money needed to actually sue them and then all the time and money thats gonna be spent looking for a new job.
It's time to look for a new job, to me it seem he/she's trying to save labour
My two cents: That other employee that misses work frequently (and is always late) probably has little kids -- but is otherwise a quality employee. This is why they got more hours. (Small kids get sick IN daycare, but daycare doesn't want them sick, so you've got to miss work and take them to the doctor and stay home with them...) OP's boss wants to fire OP, so I think OP isn't as good an employee. YDI OP.
If OP was that horrible they would be fired. In the real world, yes you get some leeway when you have kids, but if you are constantly missing work then that's a totally different story and that establishment doesn't have to employ you
And in the real world, your boss isn't going to accept constant lateness because it's your responsibility to create a schedule that will prevent that, not theirs
i don't know if OP can sue for slander or discrimination but they can take it to unemployment. a significant reduce in hours is grounds for a case there, at the least you can get the remaining hours made up through them until you can find yourself a better job
Gotta wonder why they view that person as more suitable than you for working.
Good news, you qualify for unemployment
She's probably offering your boss additional services. Next job.

he fits the definition of a Horrible boss I'm sorry :)
I would use the time off to start looking for a better job where they appreciate you. Sometimes, you just can't win and it's time to move on. Best of luck, OP !
