Today, I got an offer to study at a good university. My father has been pushing me to apply for years, so I ecstatically broke the news. Instead of congratulating me, he just grunted and delivered the more important news that he's divorcing my mum. Moment ruined. FML

What a great way to ruin a moment... I'd flip

Congratulations OP. Hang in there, and don't let their problems over shadow your success!

Well congrats on getting in to uni XD

You should have enough self-esteem to rejoice in your accomplishment without requiring validation from anyone else. Was it just a coincidence that your parents are divorcing when you got accepted to that school, or did it cause the final fight between your parents?

That's a horrible thing to imply. Divorce between married couples is never the kid's fault.

I implied nothing. I did present two choices ;)

A lot of parents in bad marriages wait till the kid is out of the house to divorce for their sake. So it could have been the final straw in a manner of speaking

Maybe the dudes your mom is going to start to nail* will give you that paternal approval you crave. *maybe she's been nailing them already, which means you have some father-figures to cheer you on.

OP is headed to university, I'm sure there will be plenty of guys there for her to bang in her desperate search for paternal approval without giving her mom more work to do. After all, she has pool boys to service and pizza delivery to tease.

He's excited for you, he wouldn't of pushed you to go for it otherwise. But as his child you should realize how tough a divorce is. If I were you I would be more upset about that. At least you have the good news to get through this mess. Good luck OP and congrats!

Nerds are sexy. Don't let your father ruin your moment. Sorry your parents are getting divorced. If your Dad can't be happy for you, I'm sure your mom is.

Moral of the story don't do other people's goals.

I'm sure when OP is rolling in money in the future he/she would have to disagree.

I'm sure all of your FML buddies congratulate you and wish you the best of luck with your future studies. So sorry to hear of your father's HUGE wet blanket during your announcement. It should have been a happy and proud moment for you both.

Maybe your dad didn't know how to tell you so thought that was a good time because you were happy so might stay okay with bad news. If you were upset he might have tried to tell you as well (hide bad news in worse news).
