You live and you learn. This day and age it is sad to say that you should never jump in and help. Always Always the best you can do is call 911 and let them handle it if it is getting to ruff. They always take up for the person beating them. What if he had a gun or a knife? You never know.

I know it sucks but most of the time when girls are hit by their boyfriends they tend to take it and accept it, and if you intervene they wont like it even though you are trying to help them. I've seen it personally. The only ones who can help girls like that are themselves they can break off the relationship if they are being abused but most of them choose not to.

I don't get how people can sit there and say "never interfere." WTF? How can you just sit there and watch someone get beat up? That's ridiculous! At least call the cops. Don't just let it happen. I saw a dude yelling at his girlfriend in public and I was about to go over and tell him to knock it off, but my boyfriend at the time stopped me. I couldn't understand why. He's 6'3", he could've backed up my 5 foot ass. But noooo. he said "dont interfere." ****. that. shit. ... course now I might stick with calling the cops or a distraction method after reading this thing.. O_o

A lot of you people don't understand. The fact that you stopped what you were doing to rush over and help a stranger who was being physically attacked was very brave and caring of you. I'm sorry you ended up in jail. Don't let that discourage you from helping someone again. I'm surprised there were no witnesses to come to your defense. NO ONE, under any circumstance, deserves to be physically or verbally abused. What most of you don't understand is that woman obviously wasn't in the right state of mind. She was probably dealing with an overwhelming amount of emotions with her boyfriend beating her in public and then having another MAN come up to her not knowing what his intentions were. Even if she did realize he was only trying to help how do we know he hasnt threatened to kill her if she ever did tell anyone what was really going on. How that woman reacted does not make her a bitch or deserve what she got. I feel sorry for all the people who are not educated enough on DV and say don't interfere, let her deal with it. I can only hope you're strong enough to remove yourself from a situaution like that BY YOURSELF should you ever get in one.

FYL. You did the right thing, and I applaud you. You also, however, presented a too-tempting opportunity for the abused woman to get back on her "man's" side. She saw a way to rechannel the boyfriend's anger away from her, and she took it. Don't forget that she's still acting as his victim, even while making you one. It may be worth investigation with the couples' friends, family, coworkers, etc., as this is surely not an isolated incident.

I can't believe so many people are saying don't interfere. That's one of the main reasons there are so many abusive relationships because nobody interferes. Also, when the OP helped her there was no way he knew that guy was her boyfriend and she was in an abusive relationship until after the fact. For all he knew the girl could have been walking along and was accosted by a guy who then started hitting her.
