Today, I got fired from my job at a small start-up company. Why? The CEO wanted to give a job to one of his former fraternity brothers who is out of work, and they couldn't afford to keep us both. FML

I guess buying your friends actually does payoff

Welcome to the real world. I was a fast-tracking star at a company for 6 years until my boss hired his old buddy to be a manager. The guy had never been a manager, and didn't know anything about our business. He immediately selected his favorite drinking and smoking buddies for preferential treatment, and started hiring his own useless friends. After doing the work of all four of them for a year or so, I finally quit when the others got promotions and better raises. Upper management begged me to stay, but since they wouldn't do anything to change any of it, I left. Then it turned out that two of them also left on the same day I did. They had been cheating on their spouses with each other and wanted to leave town to be together somewhere else. Weird.

Well that's grounds for a lawsuit! You might be in a position to be sure that he can't afford ANY employees!

Don't listen to these people. If you sue, you're out even more money. You have to prove that's why he officially fired you and even if it was on paper, it's be hard to do. Suck it up and move on. It's how the fraternity world works, brotherhood. Find one of your friends to help you out.

The Greek system and the bonds of brother hood from frats are strong

Well, I think that brothers, if they are more competent should always come first, so you must have been doing a poor job at the office

he can't fire you without real cause. tell HR and have him get thrown out on his ass.

Challenge it! If he's not as qualified a worker as you are and your boss only hired him as a friend you may get your job back. Some companies don't allow that sort if behavior.
