I'm thinking this has to do with balance. There is a time to be laughing and smiling and a time to seem busy and work orientated or serious. Try find a balance OP and if he still isn't pleased, talk it out with him before deciding your next step. No matter what job you're in you'll come across things or people you aren't thrilled with, finding what battles to fight will really help rest your mind :)

Sounds like my job! I just put my 2 weeks in after I found a better one. You can do the same. Don't put up with it for two years like I did. It only gets worse!
