Don't the cops usually bring people in? Why are you the one dropping him off at jail, unless you had to arrest him? If you did arrest him, though, that sucks even more.

Not everyone is remanded into custody after sentencing. Sometimes people are free on bail and then report to jail on a specified date to begin serving their sentence. This is especially true if there is a problem with prison over crowding in that area.
