But unless your mum is also friends with them it won't show up on their news feed, they'd have to look at your actual profile to see the message.
Stuff like this is why I never have coworkers on Facebook, period.
Hard lesson learned. Make lists of your various classes and groups of friends. Have "work friends" and "family" and "college friends" and such. Some can overlap... I have one group called "good people" who are the people who are in my outer circle of friends, and "best people" who are people in my inner group of most trusted friends. Then you can set it so only certain groups can see your wall posts. No one I know from college (except my closest friends) can see my wall posts, and once I get friends from work, they would be put on an even more restrictive list than people I know from college, except for those I become close to. Easy!
Your mom isn't that bright but, this is on you. Friends in reality and friends on Facebook are completely different, and stuff posted on fb never stays a secret, word spreads fast.
This is why I have the visibility for any posts people leave on my wall set to "only me". That way, no one else can see when my mother (who is technologically illiterate) leaves private messages on my wall.

If you wanted to keep it secret, why would you tell anyone period?
This is why I don't like Facebook. No bloody privacy. I honestly don't get this need to share every part of your life with everyone.
