Let this be a lesson to never EVER make decisions on your own life based on someone else. Besides, people do what they want to do. If your bf wanted to be with you he would've made it work if you took the other job. Also, if he really wanted to be with you, your employment status would matter little to him. When it boils down, he probably used the job as an excuse for an awkward conversation.
I'm 50/50 here. First of all, FYL for your boyfriend being a jerk and leaving you because you didn't take the job. But, YDI for not taking the job. In this economy, you're lucky to get anything. If you chose the job over your boyfriend and he wasn't understanding, that's his problem, not yours.

Unless you're married, always choose the better job/new promotion. That way, if the boyfriend is worth it, you'll find a way to make the relationship work. If not, you'll more money.
