Today, I knocked over a display case at a mall, shattering hundreds of dollars in goods. Embarrassed, I tried to scurry out of the nearest door without being seen. I scuttled right into the janitor's closet, the door automatically locking behind me. I waited for an hour to be let out. FML

Favourited for use of the word 'scuttled'

Well now you can get a broom to sweep up the mess you made, OP.

I don't think you were embarrassed as much as afraid you'd be held liable. And were you?

Seems like things would have gone a lot smoother had you just admitted it and apologized.

In what world does a door for employees lock while they would be standing inside of it?

Sounds like you didn't get caught tho ;)

...He obviously got caught by the people who had to let him out of the closet after it locked behind him.

Every time I read/hear the word "scuttle" I immediately think of Dr. Zoidberg. Anyways, did they figure out you made the mess?

It was probably caught on camera anyway. They're always watching... always watching.

I was thinking the same thing. Even if OP didn't get caught at the time from the actual employees at the time, the cameras are sure to have caught OP. I don't know how easy it will be for OP to get off so easy on this one if the cameras did (and I'm sure they did) catch him. Next time just apologize and help clean up, OP! Would have saved you the embarrassment of being found a few hours later in the janitors closet.

Question... did your forget about the cameras? Or, were you hoping they missed it, too?

Were you texting, and not paying attention to your surroundings?

Guys, maybe we shouldn't be too hard on OP. Even though it's not an excuse, they might have really awful social anxiety. I have trouble saying "no" when I'm asked if I need help looking for anything by store staff, having to stay there, explain the whole situation, and then either get scolded or having to clean up while standing beside a staff member would be awful. Like I said, that alone isn't an excuse, but, they might have been the type who might even pass out from a social situation, and know that they wouldn't have been any help anyways? I'm probably reading too much into this, but, this site really has a habit of assuming the worst of people.
