Today, I learned that my mother now refuses to drink anything but bottled water because she actually believes that the government is putting a chemical in tap water that lowers pregnancy rates. She is trying for her 5th child. FML

Well they do put Fluoride in the water which is a neural toxin (IE kills brain cells). Why do you think toothpaste says if swallowed contact poison control?

Depending on where you live it may be a good idea. Although it's better to test it all yourself (I know you can do pH and cleanliness yourself) and decide then. Although boiling it and then bottling it is probably the best.

I've lived out in the country all my life, and thus was raised on well water. Tap water tastes disgusting in town, and sometimes bottled water isn't much better than that. If I had to live in town, I'd get one of those large water coolers with water jugs, and drive out to the country to fill them with well water. Because I certainly wouldn't be using the taps.

Really? Trying for her fifth child? Maybe she needs a little tap water. I really don't have any respect for people who make a leisure activity out of popping out babies. It doesn't matter if they have the ability to support said children or not. Please tell me your mom isn't like that crazy Duggar woman and her 20 kids that she doesn't actually raise because TLC and the older kids do it for her.

She's no entirely incorrect. They heavily chlorinate the water, then add a chemical to counter the chlorine. Then they add fluoride, etc.

75 - thanks for the clarification! The article wasn't super clear about transmission, or at least from memory that's what I felt. I did read about them researching it to create a plan to eradicate it in case it is used as a biological weapon, but wouldn't the strains be different anyway? How could you protect yourself from an entirely different strain? It's unlikely their methods to produce a highly contagious strain would be exactly the same. I mean, as it stands, the normal flu shots won't even cover ALL flu strains because of mutations/other factors. It just seems a little scary that someone gave them the funding.

Tap water and bottled water REALLY isn't that bad for you people. It's not like it's going to cause dysentery or something like that if you drink it. Just be glad that it's not river water from the Mississippi River, Ganges River, Yellow River, or the New River in Mexico. Those rivers are so polluted that one probably will die if not get really sick.
