"flying ants" are termites
Both ant and termite colonies produce winged queens and workers when they're ready to reproduce.
Start an ant farm?
Bro, if the ac unit was included as part of your amenities when you signed the lease, then owner has to fix it per your lease. Just call your nearest renters rights hotline.. Trust me I'm a limo driver! Seriously though call a renters right hotline. They will tell you how to handle this. Update us please.
my parents bought a window a/c unit when our unit froze up. worked VERY well. was about $200 BUT you can use it in any room (easy to install) cools down a room fast and is quiet. no need to suffer because your landlord is a douche. oh and send him the electrical bill because I'm quite certain it us against the law for him to not fix your ac.
So in most states if the unit is advertised with heat and AC the landlord has an obligation to maintain that status throughout the lease agreement. If they do not they have violated the terms and you can legally break the lease without penalty and move somewhere that doesn't suck.
Invest in a window ac. Then when you leave you'll have it just in case.

Invest in a window screen. Just because the landowner won't improve your quality of living doesn't mean you're bound to his whims :)
There's only one thing you can do now. And it involves fire... a lot of it
