Today, I'm celebrating my birthday in Russia. While we were enjoying a sauna, one of the guests decided to add water in order to make steam. It wasn’t water, it was vodka. You can imagine the rest. FML

science class, kids! alcohol has to be over 140 proof (70 alcohol per volume) to be flammable. most vodka (even in Russia) is 60-120 proof. so, unless it was stronger than average vodka, it would not have caught fire. if it was over 140 proof, it wold have still taken an open flame to ignite it. most likely: vodka evaporated and turned into gas, and got everyone VERY drunk. your lungs absorb alcohol WAY quicker and more direct than your stomach, because you're stomach makes alcohol go through the liver before the bloodstream. the lungs are a direct line to the bloodstream. instant shitface. Well, that's what you mean when you say an unforgettable birthsday.

I don't get it. That's just a traditional way to add "flavoured steam"(mixture of alcohol and water). It's actually pretty harmless and nice- and you don't get drunk at all because the alcohol evaporates. Another thing is drinking alcohol in the sauna which is a very, very stupid idea. (Sounds to me the OP was getting drunk by the idea itself-- like a placebo effect. I had a lot of wodka and slibowitz steam saunas and nobody ever got even tipsy.)

For many people it is common to have drinks while being in the sauna, especially during parties or when you go with friends. In finland for example pretty much every get-together ends up in sauna in one point and to have a few "sauna-beers" is completely normal. I never counted, but I am pretty sure I have been to more saunas with a beer than without.

Yeah, I've been to those flavoured saunas too, but they add a couple of tablespoons of the spirit, so there isn't enough alcohol involved to get people tipsy. In OPs case there was a whole bottle added. Beer, especially in Finland, has very few vol% alcohol, so while great amounts would still make you drunk, it also adds a lot of liquid into your system, so drinking beer in the sauna isn't all that bad. Strong liquor is a different story. Drinking that in the sauna is indeed very stupid.

I find it funny that you had to add that you were in Russia, reinforcing a stereotype.

Probably the most Russian thing to ever happen.

I believe you've commented on the wrong FML. That, or you're not sure what you're talking about.

#25: Unfortunately, he DOES think he Absolute-ly knows what he's talking about.... :-( lol

Is this the sequel to hot tub time machine?

...one can only hope that the rest of your birthday plans didn't go up in flames.

If the sauna burned down, that was a Finnish birthday right there :P

Congratulations, comrade! Welcome to Russia, where you don't take a sauna, the sauna takes you.

Why is this a fml? It sounds pretty fun.
