Today, I'm jobless and picked up transcription work online. I typed furiously all day. I have made a grand total of $2.06. FML

That's a start! You might make $4 tomorrow :)

At this rate, you're REALLY going to be able to splurge when you eventually pick up those wrist splints you'll need for carpal tunnel syndrome!

Damn! You mean all of the high-paying sign-flipping-on-the-side-of-the-road jobs are taken?!?!?

Most transcription work requires some sort of credential. You don't just do it as a side job or for extra cash. The transcriptionists (medical) I know work 50+ hours and are very dedicated and good at what they do. My guess is, if this job was that easy to get (you said you were otherwise unable to obtain employment), and are paying below federal minimum wage, it is a scam. I doubt you'll even see the $2. Sorry, OP.

I'd definitely suggest looking into dog walking/sitting. That's what I did when I couldn't get a job; both in Hawaii and in my new state now. Sometimes you don't make much (I've ranged from making $10/week to $150/week) but definitely more than $2 a day.

Tomorrow try masturbating furiously and see if you make even more.

Getting started can be slow OP, my first month I only made £90 (about $115), but as you get faster at typing and better at hearing and understanding things, and get yourself a nice little autocorrect list on MS word you can start flying with it. Plus you'll probably be on training rates, once you get off those it's a lot better, and it's something that fits with any schedule of sleeping and hobbies you like! I personally wouldn't change it for the world!

I'm an in-house transcriptionist, but I visit a forum with a lot of independent contractors. What is the audio hour rate? You should not get less than $60 per audio hour. Depending on how many speakers, the clarity of the audio, whether or not the speakers talk over each other, whether or not any of them have accents, and other factors, it takes roughly three to four hours of typing time for every hour of audio. At my job, I type a lot of letters and memos for a very busy CEO. I only transcribe one person, and I've been here a long time, so I'm used to his dictating style and can go pretty fast through the work. If I were to change to a different type of transcribing, it would take me a while to get used to it. I would guess you don't have a foot pedal (which is almost crucial) or good software for transcribing (which is absolutely crucial). If you are going to make a career of this, you need at least good transcription software that enables you to use hot keys or software and a foot pedal. I've done some transcribing at home for my job without a foot pedal, but it takes a lot longer than when I'm in the office. I also use different (free) software, which works differently from what I use in the office. You should be able to get a foot pedal for about $50 on Amazon. Good luck!

At least you might able to afford ramen at this rate.

That Amazon Mechanical Turk can be a bitch, sometimes. Good luck with finding a new job, though. Your typing skills will be stellar!!
