Today, I'm precisely one month away from graduating with a degree in translation for the sole purpose of becoming a state-authorised translator. Today, I also discovered that my government has just decided to abandon the concept of authorisation for translators. FML

I wrote this - just in an FML mood. I'm the OP, and this is precisely the point. I already did some translation (mostly unpaid, but was getting experience) before I started this degree. Translators without this authorisation can also get work, but that takes more experience. I figured with the degree I would actually get paid for doing what was otherwise my hobby. Now any motivation to finish writing my thesis seems to have disappeared.

The point is that OP wanted to become a translator and up until recently the only way to do that was to have a degree that would allow you to be authorised by the state. The FML is that they could have saved the trouble of getting the translation degree since it's not a requirement anymore.

The nice thing is that if you can't get that job for some reason or you change your mind about your career field, you have a lot of options in front of you with a degree like that.

Well at least you can put this on your résumé and hopefully it will give you an advantage over non-college educated translators

Why go to college or university then? You go to college/university to study to get a degree in a particular area to get a job there. So not putting your hopes into the job you are study for means its probably not what you want to do.

They're in Italy. What this means is they're probably using the British spelling of authorised, not the American.
