Today, I noticed quite a few scars on one of my coworker's legs. I pulled her aside and told her that self-harm was never the answer, and if she needed to talk I was always there. Turns out she's just clumsy and trips a lot. FML

Making assumptions is a stupid thing to do, but then, if she DID inflict self-harm, it's not like she'd admit it that easily.

Don't let this one awkward misunderstanding stop you in the future. Keep doing this and one day you may save a life. Btw you're a really good person for caring

Every day as a toddler, I would run outside the back door, trip over the single concrete step and face plant. Every single day. My parents started to wonder if I was retarded while relatives started wondering about abuse. Nosy nits could have wrecked my childhood with paranoia. My GF has numerous vasculitis scars on her legs that kind of look like cigar burns. Your piece of mind should not trump our rights to privacy and not getting hassled when leaving the house. None of these are clear signs that strangers have a right to bring up.

eh dont feel bad... its the thought that counts. just reply with oh well then please try to be more careful with where you walk. wouldnt want you to scratch that pretty face :) cheesey but always a great way to dodge a wrong assumption although if your both girls just tell her to be more careful you wouldnt want to her break anything on herself.

OK, it's nice of you to care about her, but before you suddenly jump to conclusions, ask her first. If she denies it, keep an eye on her. I don't think she would just leave her legs uncovered like that though.

Don't worry about it for you had good intentions, but maybe next time find a better way to make her give you a reason before you even ask. Like make hints at it, rather than coming up with the answer yourself you know? It's very nice of you to care :)

how is that an fml? "oh no, I showed that I care about an issue thag it turns out allegedly doesn't directly affect this one person" not like she'll think any less of you

As someone who self harms, if anyone came up to me and said "it's never the answer" I'd lie my ass off, just like I have been all my life. Also, if we don't know each other well enough for me to tell you that I self harm, then my self harm is none of your ******* business.

Trust me, if someone DOES harm themself, they do their best to cover it up. Like if it's on their legs, they wear trousers and not jeans. If it's on the arms, long sleeve t-shirts instead of short-sleeve.

YDI for being nosy. F that poor girl's life because now she's gonna be self-conscious about those scars and she might stop wearing shorts or skirts out of fear that another smartass will make the same dumb assumption...
