Was she a bitch? I am not saying she has the right to talk about your mother like that but you overheard her talking with a friend, which means she didn't say it to your face. If your mother was emotionally manipulative and making your girlfriend's life hard then maybe to her it is a relief to finally be with you without having to worry about your mother ruining her life. While I would be hurt and pissed, unless your heard the whole conversation or know the whole story then you should seek out your girlfriend and tell her what you heard and how it made you feel. IF she has a good reason for her comment, then decide if she is worth keeping around. She might have a solid reason and care about you deeply. You are not in a relationship with anyone but her, how she feels about your mother is not as important as how she feels about you. If this is not the first time your GF has done something or said something like this before then you have to decide if this behavior is okay. If no then find someone else.

OP, a good woman is hard to find; a bad mother is easy to have the bad luck to have. Your mother is now dead. She is no longer a part of your life. Evaluate whether the girlfriend is worth keeping. I didn't talk to my mother for the whole two years before she died, because she was such an asshole bitch to me during that time. Some people now think I'm the asshole because of that. They are welcome to try to kick my ass for that. I live in the house I inherited from her. I guess she recognized she was in the wrong.
