So I'm guessing the first few things in the guidelines were "everything in moderation" and "exercise self control", weren't they?

Congrats, that's further than most people get. One big thing, if you go off track and binge, just start fresh the next day. Beating yourself up never solves anything :)

May I suggest the beer and jelly donut diet. 1 beer and 1 jelly donut for breakfast. 2 for lunch. 3 for dinner. Your snacks should be donut holes as they by definition have no calories.
