LimeyGoodteeth tells us more.
I am the original poster. It was an adult ESOL class. School policy - strictly adhered to - is that students can't be admitted if they are more than 5 minutes late and all students know this. Lateness is disruptive and disrespectful to other students. We all eventually had the cake later anyway!

I don't see why people are acting like OP has done anything wrong. Clearly in that school, there's a rule against being late, and students are supposed to *not* be late, so OP was just enforcing the rules, like they're *supposed* to do. If the class starts at say, 9am, then obviously you're supposed to *be there* at *that time*, not some other random time. In my school, if you're late for exams they won't let you sit them, and you end up with a 0. (I know exams and classes are different, but still)
Wow you're a jerk
This is directed to some of the idiots commenting on this post, NOT the OP: Unless you are a teacher, you should reserve judgment. You don't know what the policy is at this particular school. Some schools are stricter than others. I worked in a school where I would have been written up for letting students in 15 minutes after class started, regardless of the reason, cake or no cake. Teachers have rules and regulations to follow as well. Secondly, many people here are claiming the teacher should have let them explain why they were late. Yeah, OK...should the teacher REALLY stop and PAUSE the ENTIRE class every time someone arrives late to listen for an explanation? How is that fair to the students who managed to make it on time? The teacher is there to EDUCATE and TEACH, not to coddle you. If you are consistently late to a job and don't put in a reasonable amount of effort, you get fired. If you are consistently late to a class and you don't put in a reasonable amount of effort, you don't pass. WELCOME TO REAL LIFE. I didn't mean for this to turn into a rant, but I am a teacher and am tired of being blamed for EVERYTHING that is "wrong" or "unfair" in my students' lives. NEWSFLASH: The world isn't always fair. Am I a perfect teacher? No. Have I ever treated a student unfairly? Probably. Most of you have no idea what being a teacher actually entails, so shut your mouths. I won't tell you how to do your job, don't tell me how to do mine.
I respect and agree with what you said. A lot of students really don't understand what teachers have to go through and this is coming from a student. I definitely don't envy your job. I've seen some teachers cry from how badly some of the students have treated them. I felt bad for the teacher because she was one of the nicer/newer teachers. I think a lot of teachers start out nice but become stern and mean after years of being treated horribly by their students.

that's why u always ask before u act..
That's what my cousin does. She shows up really late but she always has food for the teacher and says she was buying him food. Works like a charm. She is his favorite student.
