Today, I regretfully confessed to my parents I have trichotillomania. There was a torturous pause, followed by the question, "Are you gay?" FML

Hold on while I google trichotillomania...

OP get some help for that! It's not good for your hair, it's pretty gross darn gross, and it's not very appealing for anyone to see! For those of you who are wondering: Trichotillomania- is the compulsive urge to pull out (and in some cases, eat) one's own hair leading to noticeable hair loss, distress, and social or functional impairment

Um...you're not only in order for a "you deserved it", but...that's also not fabulous, and freaking weird...

Oh man i'm obsessed with pulling out the front part of my head when my hair grows out. It leaves a nice circular patch. Luckily for me I cut my hair every 6 months.

People are constantly giving names to non-existent self-caused 'diseases' give me a freaking break. Stop pulling your hair. You are a grown ass person. Hahahahaha hahahahahaha

Giving you a +1 and high five before the whining trolls come in and downvote you.

I feel you. Except, my parents would be fine if I were gay. Instead, when I told them of my trichotillomania, they threatened to send me to a mental hospital if I didn't stop. They didn't even bother to research it, so didn't realize that trichotillomania happens against people's will.

It means to pull your own hair out and in some cases now down on it. Omnomnom trichotillomania!

While I agree that the reaction was odd, it's your own fault for telling your parents just the name of your condition, without even defining it. I think that 999/1000 people have NO IDEA what that means.

Stay strong, OP. Keep your hands busy and you mind stress free. You aren't alone. :)

Did they know what trichotillomania is? Most people don't. While their respond was... certainly odd, I think you should have said "I have a condition called trichotillomania where I pull out my hair." Then the "are you gay" probably wouldn't have happened. Maybe.
