Today, I regretfully confessed to my parents I have trichotillomania. There was a torturous pause, followed by the question, "Are you gay?" FML

Hold on while I google trichotillomania...

OP get some help for that! It's not good for your hair, it's pretty gross darn gross, and it's not very appealing for anyone to see! For those of you who are wondering: Trichotillomania- is the compulsive urge to pull out (and in some cases, eat) one's own hair leading to noticeable hair loss, distress, and social or functional impairment

Dude, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that you had such a difficult time telling them about your condition. I don't think you deserved that for trying to be accurate. I don't currently have anything related I can think of, but my boyfriend has dermatillomania (sp?) and all I can really do is remind him he's doing it...

I don't need to rip off my hair, threads of hair fall off all the time and everywhere. My boyfriend is getting tired of it. ._.

I feel you OP I have had it since I was 8, and started cutting in high school. I have no eyebrows, and bald patches all over my body. Every day I pray I can stop and then some hair will start to bother me, and 2 hours later I'll still be sitting there tweezing hairs. I've been in therapy a long time, and it's helped a lot with the cutting, but over 20 years of hair pulling and being told "Why don't you just stop" I guess has taken its toll. I still am holding out hope that I can stop and my eyebrows will eventually grow back. Stay strong! It doesn't make you bad or anything, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Was I the only one who didn't have to Google trichotillomania because I already knew what it was?

I'm so sorry /: I have trich too /: Some people...

I completely understand your situation. I have had Trichotillomania since I was in fourth grade as a way to relieve stress, but as more stress was added on over the years, the more I pulled. I have been seeing psychiatrists for four years now and it has helped a lot, but I still pull sometimes. My solution is cutting my hair really short, even if it makes me look like a dyke. Which ever method you choose to use, you do need help. Also, you need to explain to your parents very thoroughly what exactly this disorder is and that is has nothing to do with homosexuality....

I have that too.... I feel your pain...

The number of people claiming weird obsessions is closely dependent on their usage of Tumblr. Somehow your parents did not notice that you were obsessively pulling out your hair? FYI: Girls pulling their pubes is normal any more.
