Today, I regretfully confessed to my parents I have trichotillomania. There was a torturous pause, followed by the question, "Are you gay?" FML

Hold on while I google trichotillomania...

OP get some help for that! It's not good for your hair, it's pretty gross darn gross, and it's not very appealing for anyone to see! For those of you who are wondering: Trichotillomania- is the compulsive urge to pull out (and in some cases, eat) one's own hair leading to noticeable hair loss, distress, and social or functional impairment

I have the same, I'm constantly pulling my hairs out but luckily I have very thick hair to begin with.

I have the same problem. My dad doesn't notice because I wear a hat all the time or comb my hair over the bald patches. The worst of it is when you don't notice what your doing until you look down and see your holding a handful of hair.

I had that when I was a kid, and now I have Dermatillomania, which is similar. My parents never noticed and I'm good at hiding it. Stay strong, OP, you can get through this. Have you considered going to the doctor about it?

I have that too! But my parents support me.

Next time just say that you pull your hair out not everyone knows medical terminology.

I have trichotillomania also. I have since I was fifteen.

I have dermatillomania and have since I was 13, I know how hard it is to admit things like this to people you care about. Good on you OP for telling your parents, I hope you were able to explain it to them.

I also have trichotillomania and have been struggling on and off with it for over 10 years... Mostly on. It's not easy and it's so frustrating! I hope you'll be able to get the help you need, OP, and find ways to cope, and hopefully your parents will support you along the way.

Why would you just expect people to know what that is?
