Today, I requested a pay rise at work. They said they couldn't do it as they have to cut costs, so I resigned. They've now re-advertised my job for more money than I asked for. FML

Maybe you should have asked for a pay RAISE instead.

#35 , as you can see from the OP's location he is from the UK. In English you ask for either a raise or a pay rise. In American English you may well ask for a pay raise, I'm unsure, but you certainly don't in the UK.

You either ask for a "raise" or a "pay rise". Both are equally valid. Either way you knew what the OP meant so why be a dick about it?

In New Zealand, it's a pay rise. I've only ever heard Americans call it a raise. I've NEVER heard 'pay raise'.

We Americans call it a pay raise. To be honest, I've never heard anyone say 'pay rise' before. I didn't even notice the phrasing in this post until it was pointed out. I feel like I just proved the "dumb American" stereotype =(

Probably because they realized what dumbfucks they were and now they're desperate to find someone new.

Hate to say it, but maybe you weren't worth the salary in their eyes. Hope you get another job soon.

So go talk to your boss about it. There might be a miscommunication that can be resolved and see you keeping your job at the rate HR is advertising

Sorry to be the bearer of reality but that just means they didn't like you enough to keep you in the company

Were you there personally? Did they confide in you the reason why they refused to grant this guy a raise? No? Then you're not really the bearer of reality, but the bearer of speculation. </pet peeve.>

#41- 40 is probably not off the mark if the starting pay of someone who has no experience in the position is higher than what someone already working in the position was asking for as far as a raise goes. I don't know about the UK but it's not an uncommon tactic in the states to get someone to quit so they don't have to pay for their unemployment benefits. Everyone is saying to apply but I'm sure his boss will have his name and number on file.

That's what you get for being greedy, I guess

I don't understand why you'd quit and cut off ALL of your salary because you couldn't immediately get a raise? you could have tried asking again. if you needed the money to the point you asked for more...why stop receiving any money at all?

Mabye op wasn't doing her job well and maybe that's why the company lied to her about the budget . Still though the company shouldn't have lied even if op wasn't doing a good job at work they coulda told her. Anyway thanks for listing to my thoughts

Obviously you weren't good enough to deserve more money sorry, YDI.

It's not that they didn't want to pay the money, OP. They just didn't want to pay YOU the money. Sorry.
