Today, I returned home after a long day of work. I noticed that my kitten had gotten a hold of my pin cushion, and that there were no needles left in it. My husband and I have only managed to find one, out of 16. FML

I hope the poor little one didn't eat them. They could perforate his stomach or bowel.

My suggestion is to walk around with a magnet....

Be careful, your chances drastically increase of finding them when it's dark.

Get your cat to a vet ASAP. You can't take chances with this sort of stuff.

You should NEVER leave things like that out and accessible when you have a kitten! I'd be taking kitty to the vet for x-rays to make sure she didn't swallow them!! You're lucky you didn't come home to a bloody house and a kitten pin cushion! That's just irresponsible, OP!

Let's not assume they are irresponsible! I doubt the pin cushion was just sitting out on the floor or whatever. Cats are very sneaky and it could have still gotten into something that was put away in what OP thought was a secure place. Hopefully a lesson learned but no need to tear OP down over an unexpected oversight.

She's doing great, she didn't ingest any of them thank god. For the record, I'd put it up somewhere where she had never gotten to before (as far as I knew), and I didn't think she'd be able to get to it. I've started putting it in the microwave or a cabinet so she can be sure not to get to it. Still only found the one. Mali also wasn't alone, she has another cat to play with and my dog as well (they go crazy playing with one another) so I know she wasn't bored and lonely. I'm not an irresponsible owner, she just managed to get into something I didn't know she could get into (it involved opening a drawer to get to it..)

Just for the sake of clarification, the knowing she hadn't invested them was determined via veterinarian? Also, see if you can rent one kind of metal detector or another. One of the kinds like used on a beach might be better for the flooring, but the hand held ones would be better for furniture. Also check the kittens usual haunts- the areas around them are probably more likely to have the lost needles. (Also, probably already did so, but just in case: check inside the needle cushion itself. We had one that was infamous for 'eating' needles.) But, yeah, renting a metal detector might save you some money on hospital bills by finding them now instead of when they inevitably resurface. In your foot. Or cats mouth.

Three words: Massive Internal Bleeding.

You need to take the kitten to the vet right now if you haven't already. I really hope you have already done so.

I'd walk around the house with a magnet and take the kitten to the vet to make sure it didn't manage to eat any.

YDI if you only have one kitten with no play buddy when you know you will be at work all day. Of course it will get bored and get into trouble. Irresponsible pet owners are the worst. Inform yourself before you get an animal and you would know that kittens should always come in pairs when they're indoor cats. Also: Why the **** did the cat even have access to the thing in the first place??

Don't even. My two dogs still get into trouble and they're constantly around each other. Having a playmate doesn't mean shit. You know how many times I've gone to the vet to ask if my dog will be okay because she's eaten this, or she got into that? A lot, and that's because she gets into trouble when I'm not home, even WITH the other dog around for her to play with. And who the **** even remembers they have a pin cushion lying around? OP probably thought the kitten couldn't reach it or shit, didn't even remember the pin cushion was there to begin with. Get off your high horse, OP isn't irresponsible for forgetting something so small and insignificant as a damn pin cushion. Shit happens. Irresponsible would be if the kitten got sick or showed symptoms of having a preforated bowel or stomach and didn't do anything, or having the cushion right out in the floor letting the kitten play with it on purpose.

That's a load of bull. Kittens should not "always come in pairs". That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! I volunteer with my local animal shelter and I have foster animals in house all the time and the kittens I get are often single. I don't know where you get your information from but they flat out lied to you. OP is not an irresponsible pet owner just because they only brought home the one kitten. There are plenty of kittens and adult cats that HAVE to be place in a single pet home. Meaning: NO OTHER ANIMALS IN THE HOUSE PERIOD.

Take a flash light and shine it around, also a magnet works as long as they aren't embedded into the carpet.
