Today, I sent in an assignment from my batshit insane teacher. The assignment was to read a poem, analyze it, and make a comic of its plot. This would've been fine if the teacher who assigned it to me didn't teach math. FML

Actually when I told my humanities teacher about the project I learned that my math teacher has a degree in literature or something. 0_0

Teacher made the decision to change majors kind of late.

Sounds like you could do with a better teacher. Teacher's and their "innovation of new ways of learning", huh?

What the...really? Who cares if you have a literature degree. You are teaching MATHEMATICS. Someone needs to smack your teacher upside the head.

... what does that has to do with MATH? Unless the comic you made had to exist out of perfectly symmetrical geometric figures with the accompanying formulas then it would make sense... but otherwise?

Kocia, why would they have to be perfectly symmetrical? What about geometric figures that are not symmetrical? What about things that can be counted easily, or infinite things? What about sequences with a finite number as their limit? Infinity? etc. More importantly, Math starts with a model. You start with a model, define relationships among your variables, etc.

Perhaps you should go take elementary school classes a "secant" time and learn to spell.

My physics teacher did the EXACT same thing! We analyzed Shakespeare... So many people dropped the class that they fired her.

Personally I'd rather have done that in math class than actual math. That class sucked, and my geometry teacher was a coach, so he didn't teach - he coached. He literally said "This is your assignment. Do it." 90% of our grade was from tests, 10% from homework (which we all got A's on just for doing it, even if all the answers were wrong). I suffered through that class, it was a nightmare, and the teacher wouldn't teach us anything, so I would have much rather read and analyzed a poem. You should consider yourself lucky you didn't have to do that root of all evil that is mathematics.

I dunno... I can imagine, there can be a perfectly mathematical point to this assignment. Math is not just 2+2. Math is also modeling relationships, logic, etc. I can imagine many very plausible scenarios where that assignment is a perfectly legitimate, innovative, interesting way to change the way you think about math (if you care to actually do it instead of dissing your teacher). I would need more details on the assignment to really judge. Shakespeare, Middle Earth, comics, poems can all be used as examples of a lot of different ideas and things - from physics to certainly, math, to philosophy, management science, information systems, statistics, whatever.

Teachers need to be monitored way more, they literally do whatever they want and no one really pays attention to them once they're credentialed.
