Today, I spent my date night babysitting. After waiting three hours later than I was supposed, the mother finally gets home at 11, too late for me to get out and have any fun. Already annoyed, I take the money as she says, "I hope this is enough, I got hungry and spent some of your money." FML

Today, I babysat the most annoying and obnoxious kids for almost eight hours, when the parents assured me that they would only be gone about three or so hours. After constant calling and worrying, they finally showed up at 11:30, completely drunk. The mother paid me with three dollars and a banana. FML

Today, I babysat for my neighbor's brat kid. The mom gave me $15 for 5 hours. I complained to my mom when I got home because last time I got $15/hour. Turns out my mom had told my neighbor that she thought they'd paid me too much last time. Thanks mom. Thanks. FML

Today, I taught a kid piano for a two hour lesson. The mom left to do some errands, and by the time two hours was up, she texted me asking to watch the kid for another "15 minutes" while she returned home. No problem, she had the money too, so I stayed. Four hours later, she showed up, and refused to pay me extra. FML

You did the right thing in staying to take care of the kids, but you should have called the mom by 8:30 to ask why she wasn't home. And you should definitely not babysit for her again until she pays you at least the agreed amount. Unfortunately, you didn't get anything in writing, so you can't really demand the money. And do ask to be paid up front next time, when she asks you to babysit, not when you arrive. If she doesn't agree to that, tell her to find someone else.

Oh for ***** sake, what world do you live in - they aren't negotiating a billion dollar merger here. Of course OP should ask to be compensated for staying later than planned - you don't enter into "written agreements" with the god damned babysitter, asshat. And you certainly don't agree to pay for Mom to stop and get a combo meal on the way home with your earnings.. OP: "Put on your big girl panties" and get yours!!!

What world do I live in? A world where babysitters can't demand to be paid what they agree on, because it isn't the kind of thing you put in writing, and if it's not in writing it may as well never have been agreed. A world where the babysitter can ask for more money, but the parent can say no, because the babysitter's only bargaining chip is "I won't work for you again until I'm paid in full." A world where, if there are other babysitters in the area, the kind of parent who will spend her babysitter's money on herself isn't likely to pay up later. I said that she should refuse to babysit again for this woman until she is paid "at least the agreed amount." AT LEAST. That means the agreed amount, IF NOT MORE. In a perfect world, the mother would come to her senses and pay for the extra three hours; but I don't live in a perfect world. I live in a world with people who will stiff you if given half a chance, people who will take advantage of a girl who's apparently too young to have fun after 11, and will think you should appreciate being paid at all. What world do you live in?

That sucks. That's when you refuse to be taken for granted, demand the money, and tell her that if she doesn't pay you properly next time (meaning AT LEAST what you agreed on), she can have fun finding a new babysitter. Anyway, unless she's at work she doesn't NEED you as a babysitter. Next time, take the date, and explain WHY to her.
