Today, I started my first day as a security guard. After spending three years and $30,000 to become a commercial pilot, only to be told on my yearly medical that I suddenly have type 1 diabetes, and will never fly again. FML

Op here, Definatly not a fake, as other posters have said, Type 1 is not exclusive to juveniles. I am 24. I had the symptoms for a few weeks (thirst, tiredness, etc.) but was only diagnosed when i went for my comm pilots medical and they detected it there. And instead of college i chose flight training. So as much as i would love to move to the states, finding a job and someone to sponsor me would be difficult.

Man, that sucks to hear that, I fell your pain, I went through a close to same thing not long ago, I hate to say it, but welcome to the security field, enjoy your stay, make the best of it, find the right company, right jobsite, its a decent job, it can be fun if you make it

There are a lot of shitty security companies out there though. I got lucky (at first anyway...) and landed a security gig at a landfill. The shack was insanely clean, there was NOBODY around EVER, I got to play video games and study to also become a pilot. They have me at some crap ass place now, but I'm taking my commercial checkride soon

I lost my pilots licence for trying to do a barrel roll in a 747 without turning the seatbelt light on.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm 14 and I really want to be a commercial pilot and was told I couldn't because I am colour blind but there is a test I can take to get past it. Maybe it's the same for you? Good luck!

"You deserved it" should be disabled for this FML! ******* trolls.

I lost my medical due to an injury and the meds that were used by numerous doctors last year, it will be another year before I'm off of them, and finally a whole another year before I'm even eligible for any class of medical (probably a 3 restriction so bye bye career), so I feel your pain bud, it sucks a whole lot; especially because flying isn't like a regular job, it's a passion that is a joy to go out and do and when you realize that someone is willing to pay you to have fun, you've got it made. Sorry to hear about this man, keep a positive attitude and maybe even check out http://www.leftseat.com as they may be able to help you get back into the sky!

Ouch =/ I'm sorry to hear about this dude. I've always been a pilot myself but haven't been able to scrape up the money for flight school yet. FYL

cant you take out an insurance claim for the money you lost?

lol, no you can't file an insurance claim for this

Type I diabetes is a Juvenile onset diabetes. It usually shows up in childhood. If you are an adult I wonder why you were not aware of something as serious and deadly as Type I diabetes, which you were born with. If it is true though, I feel sorry for you OP. Nothing like getting your dreams being shattered because of something you have no control over.

Type 1 diabetes usually gets diagnosed in childhood, but the OP might have LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults), which presents in adult life

You obviously don't have diabetes yourself because you aren't "born with it." it's something that develops. Yes, some people do get it extremely young, but that's not always the case. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 20 years old and halfway through college and I know someone who wasn't diagnosed until 24 so it's possible that the OP is a newly graduated college student. don't make assumptions. to OP: sorry to hear this. look into other options for a career and good luck! :)

It can take a while for enough of the pancreas to be destroyed to not make enough insulin. Onset in the teens or 20s is quite common.

No, you're not born with it; in fact, people have been diagnosed as late as 35 years old. My brother was diagnosed when he was 11.

Most people with type I diabetes are diagnosed in their late teens. Early teens or early twenties is also quite common. It's not a birth defect, but it develops because the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

thank you. all of my friends assume I'm born with type 1. not that I developed it.

You are not born with Type 1 diabetes and it is not deadly. Only if people completely fail to maintain it and do everything wrong can it then be fatal

actually it can show up in someone later on in life. it is called juvinile onset diabetes because most cases show up in kids. im 14 and was just barely diagnosed. but you dont have to be born with it. in most cases you have a virus in your body that decides to attack your pancreas and that causes type 1. or hereditary but you are born with it if it was inherited. but it is really cool that you know alot because most people know nothing and just think i ate too much sugar!

Be a firefighter! This happened to me, I wanted to fly jets for the USMC, but I have hypertension and a shady history with cardio genetics, as well as suffering a knee injury a few years ago, so they wouldn't let me go to fighter pilot school. So I went to firefighter school instead, it's a HELL of a lot of fun!
