Today, I took a video of a fellow employee doing nothing but watching YouTube videos at work. When I showed the video to my boss, hoping he'd be reprimanded, I got fired for operating video equipment on company grounds. FML

That sucks for you and for your coworkers. Now they're not only having to work to cover HIS lazy ass, they've got to do the work you aren't there to do :( Hopefully his ass got canned as well. Lazy coworkers suck for everyone else.

Honestly it depends on where OP works. For example if he works for pretty much any kind of government entity or security agency, operating video equipment would be a serious offense because it could compromise sensitive information from customer names to social security numbers. If there is a computer policy about personal use, like there usually is in pretty much any work environment, there is usually a way for higher ups to monitor this computer usage and just voicing OP's concerns or filing a complaint should have been sufficient. All in all there was a better way to do this OP. YDI.
