Today, I took my girlfriend out to a vegetarian-friendly restaurant. She ordered shrimp fettuccine, and I asked why. She slowly explained to me that vegetarians can eat shrimp, then muttered that she now knows who has the brains in our relationship. FML

The word she was looking for was pescatarian (the term for someone who eats fish meat but not any other kind of meat). So she was stupid to be arrogant in the first place, and doubly so for getting the term wrong.

To be absolutely fair to you both there are definitely differences among people in what they consider to be vegetariation. (Regardless of the actual definition is from something like Oxford.) Basically you thought shrimp counted as meat, she obviously didn't or didn't care. And that's okay!

I'm a Hindu and in some sects, seafood isn't considered "non-veg". I'm not completely certain as to why, but a few of my friends follow it and it's always seemed a bit shady to me haha

Okay, 1. She needs to learn the difference between vegetarian and pescatarian if she's going to be like that, and 2. Why is "pescatarian" even a thing? Meat is muscle. You eat the muscle of the fish, so it is fish meat. Just be honest and say you're a selective vegetarian.

No. Pesca is latin/ related to the italian for fish. They eat fish. Only Fish. Vegetarians do not eat fish. "selective vegetarian" is bullshit.

yes fish are animals. but most vegetarians chose it for either health benefits or animal rights. I havent heard of anyone having a heart attack from eating fish or fish being abused like cows and pigs. fish have muscles. just like cows and pigs. but they are completely different to the point where "vegetarians" include it into their diet.

If you haven't heard of fish being abused you haven't been paying attention. You think it's fun being pulled from the sea and slowly suffocating? You think the sheer waste of life involved with all the undesired species which get caught in the nets doesn't constitute cruelty? You think fish farms, places so packed with fish they're constantly breaching the water and they are almost uniformly riddled with mites and other pests and diseases sounds fun? Sure. No one is ever abusive to fish....
