Today, I was debating weed legalization in drug awareness. I was thoroughly unleashing arguments: how marijuana turns normal citizens into criminals, how the government spends billions to enforce drug laws, when I lost my train of thought. My teacher grinned saying, "My point exactly." FML

katzperiod tells us more.

Ok, my turn on my own post. My slip up came because it is very hard for me to organize my thoughts when I don't write them down and also because of frequent personal use. This is all besides the point of the debate though. I oppose the marijuana laws for both my own selfish reasons and from an economic-minded libertarian approach. It is written in the Declaration of Independence that all men are entitled to their own pursuit of happiness. From a public health point, marijuana does not physically harm anyone. Hard drugs should remain illegal because they will lead you to decay and death. Marijuana does not cause lung cancer or any other type of cancer. Zero people in the history of mankind have died directly from weed use. It is impossible to overdose and the worst that can happen is lethargy and fatigue. It can and has been used to treat over 120 diseases or symptoms of other medication. This country spends 12 billion dollars fighting pot with no results. If marijuana were legalized and taxed, then it would produce 6-7 billion dollars in revenue. That means almost 20 billion dollars would be gained every year that marijuana is legalized and taxed, money that can be spent on education, health care, environmental reform, defense, anything. Currently there is a huge overpopulation problem in prisons. 40% of all arrests are because of drug laws. Again as an American, I want to support legitimate American businesses and my government with my weed money. The people bringing weed into this country are international gangs that also deal in cocaine, heroin, prostitution, slavery, and arms deals. I do not enjoy supporting those causes for what I consider should be my personal freedom. To legalize pot would also create millions of jobs. Limited hemp research has proven that it would reduce dependence on foreign oil through hemp products and biodiesel made from hemp. Hemp is biodegradable and plastic can be synthesized from hemp fibers. Hemp seeds contain more protein than soy beans and could lower malnutrition if only it was legal to include it in aid packets sent to Third World countries. There is no slippery slope after you legalize pot. To say that fully automatic weapons could be legalized once pot is is absolutely absurd. Jake, the only reason weed is grouped with illegal drugs is because the government decided to place that label on it. Other drugs do physical and emotional harm through addiction. In response to #54, a good reason all those chemicals are present in weed smoke is because there has been no scientific approach to removing them, and most weed is smoked without a filter. Tobacco has been cultivated in America for 400 years and science has been around for 150 of those, the tobacco companies have billions of dollars to spend funding both research on how to make it safer and to fund anti-pot studies. I say enough propaganda. Listen patiently to what others say and accept it only if they can prove it with facts. All that I have stated above can be proven with facts. Jake, could it be that pot makes your family lazy because they don't want to be arrested outside? For someone who posts that you don't want people to cram opinions down other people's throats, you certainly like to cram your own down ours. In the last one I just read you were using mostly all caps.

I guess being poor should be a crime as well

That's just awful of her, and really anyone, to assume that everyone who supports marijuana legalization actually uses the drug. Supporting legalization doesn't mean you're a pothead, it means you're open-minded.

"If weed isn't addictive, then why do so many potheads keep smoking it, even to the point where you throw your futures and lives away?" For the same reason anybody does something destructive to themselves; BECAUSE MANY HUMAN BEINGS AREN'T VERY SMART. The thing is, I am sitting here eating a chocolate biscuit, and I weigh 135lbs. Yet this same chocolate biscuit, according to you, has the power to make people keep eating and eating and eating until they're a blob of obesity... ...yet I weigh 135lbs. So, perhaps you should be blaming people's addictive personalities and lack of willpower, rather than the things that tempt them. Why should I be denied my chocolate biscuit because other people can't help themselves eating themselves to death? Why should anyone be denied weed because some people have a lack of willpower? And as for weed making you lazy, you're taking the subjective example of your dad and a few friends as conclusive proof that the drug makes you lazy? My experience differs, and a lot of creativity can happen with that drug, and quite a few famous writers and artists tend to agree. We all have subjective experiences with it. Why should yours be any more true than anyone else's? My last thought for you, #27: we're all on this earth for a VERY short period of time. If someone wants to enjoy something that'll make them happy, and know and accept that it *might* reduce their time here, why would you deny them that pleasure? Do you drive? I do. I ride a motorcycle. There's a distinct likelihood that I'll die riding it. Would you try to take that pleasure away from me? What about anything else I enjoy that might put me at risk; flying on a plane, going on a rollarcoaster, eating at a restaurant, getting out of bed? Why do you feel it's acceptable to stop people enjoying drugs and accepting their risks, but not acceptable to stop them enjoying all those other things? We are ADULTS, and adulthood is all about being responsible for your own actions. The more you ban things for people's own good, the more you treat them like CHILDREN... ...and the ultimate expression of the state treating people like children...is fascism.

This is probably the smartest comment I've read on this post.

There, now I've Godwin'd it. We can all go back to our busy lives. :P

So I'm not gunna lie here. I smoke my fair share of weed. I also smoke it with my friends Last time I smoked, we spent 2 hours dancing to techno. Clearly not lazy I also enjoy longboarding when I'm high, also not lazy. And as far as being addicted to pot, if you have every pleasured yourself, its a hard habit to break. No drugs required. What about shopaholics? Nymphomaniacs? Both of which don't require drugs, but do result in pleasure, just like weed. So #27, don't try to summarize marijuana and its effects because your friends are **** ups

Granted there are few things better than eating when you are high, or watching a great movie, but who doesn't love those anyway. Am I the devil for enhancing the experience with this "killer" drug? PS Michael Phelps, the man who has won the most gold medals in the recorded history of the modern olympics, smokes weed. Whether he admits it or not, that party was not his first time...

#27, I smoked pot all the damn time in high school, and i graduated with a 3.6 and four varsity letters. I hardly ever do it anymore, because I grew out of that phase of my life. Sometimes it's still fun to chill out though. Weed is no different than any other substance on the planet. Like #33 says, junk food can be just as bad for a person if not only eaten in moderation, but no one's calling for the outlaw of twinkies. That's the key, MODERATION. Fact of the matter is a person who sits on their ass smoking weed and being lazy all day would 9 times out of 10 be just as useless without weed. It's not the drugs fault, it's the people who use it and the way that they use it.

Oh you know guys, one puff of the ganja makes you go on killing sprees. The majority of people I know smoke weed, including my 2 bosses, who own a successful pizzeria, and none of them are criminals. Maybe you should do a bit more research...

man if my teacher called me out in class like that i would have busted right back on his ass with a "motherfuc*er, i bought it from you!"

addiction can be gentic, which means, if you grandpa was an alcoholic/drug addict and your mom/dad was there is a much higher chance you will be. it also has different affects on different people, thus mister # 35 is active while high, and # 37 is not an addict, it also takes a different amount of time to become an addict for everyone. my brother is addicted after one time, starting with alcohol ending with other drugs, and as far as the whole "it's my life, my choice" to a point thats true, you steal, no longer only your life it's affecting. and to those that think legalizing it will fix these problems, legalizing meth will no doubt fix that problem, right? no backfire there. but if we are gonna legalize drugs, next it will be fully automatic firearms which are just fine, when, like drug used safely. in reality we need to prectice willpower and moderation, not proabition. we need to think and not just read campain slogans. and to all you fucktards that think its everything or nothing and force your opinions on others shut the **** up, you voice is like the anti-logic you are worse than the pro-life groups
