Today, I was diagnosed with migraines. Any loud sounds or bright lights make it worse. I'm the drummer for a heavy metal band, so I now have to choose between really bad migraines or a career. FML

You should always out your health before most things! Remember that you only have one body, while you can have multiple careers. Fyl though, and I hope the medications are effective :) I have heard that migraines are horrible to say the last, so good luck in the future, always a lot of options left.

Wear sunglasses and ear plugs while you perform. Problem solved.

With migraines, you don't really have a choice. You can't really choose your band and play with intense migraines, your playing will suffer so bad that you'll be kicked out within months. Go to your doctor and talk about medications like triptans, injections, etc. and if that doesn't work, see if your area has a Chronic Pain Center. Believe me, I've been dealing with these since I was two, and I'm 24 now.

I agree there is no cure for migraines. Just Meds to prevent them and pain killers for when they get to bad. Been there done that both me and my wife get them they can be hell. Like someone else said now you don't have to play that horrible music. Heavy metal drummer isn't much of a career. There are thousands of people that play instruments and few that are lucky enough to make good money at it. Also all the alcohol and drugs that go with being in a Rock band normally lead to a short life.

"Horrible music"? Well done, you've just managed to insult this guy's career choice and taste in music whilst being patronizing as hell. You don't like heavy metal. Fair play. That doesn't make it 'horrible'. Strangely enough your taste is not supreme. Crazy, right? Also, you have no idea whether this dude's taken the drugs that 'go with the scene', nor do you have any idea whether his band is successful. For all you know, they might have their own fan base, they might have a cult following, hell they might even be famous. And even if not, has it not crossed your mind that he has a passion for playing this kind of music? Metalheads are amongst the most passionate musicians. Don't be so condescending. Don't present your opinion as fact and get your facts straight before you start giving 'advice'... rant over.

You know that bright lights and noise doesn't CAUSE migraines. I've had them for years..

he probably knows his condition better than you do, so shut up.

Take a break from drumming for a little bit. Like I've been told, you've got to get them stopped before you can figure out what causes them. My doctor put me on preventative meds that I was supposed to take everyday. Too bad they made my headaches worse.. They might work for you.. Plus they weren't near as expensive as migraine meds ($3 vs $30 with insurance).

You don't need to quit the band. Migraines are most often a result of food you have eaten. Chocolate, old cheddar cheese, bananas, if u can figure out the trigger it will be easier to manage. There are also meds out there that help. I use Maxalt RPD it's a wafer cookie that desolves in your mouth. With in 5 minutes my migraine is gone. Don't lose hope, u do have options!

dude I know how it is I do back up vocals and play drums in a heavy metal band while diagnosed with chronic migraines and I have to wear ear protection while playing + 3 advil after every show and a warm shower afterwards. Usually works for me but idk were all different but good luck sir

Sorry to hear that OP. It can be hard giving up something that is a big part of your life, like I am assuming music is. FYL I don't know what I'd do if I had to give up guitar. :/ Your strong IF you did leave the band.

That sucks. I love rock n' roll, but don't let it come in the way of your health.
