By fuck you, dad - 27/09/2012 18:36 - United Kingdom - Brighton

Today, I was eating out at a restaurant with my family. My dad had drained most of our bottle of wine, so thinking he'd be a little less uptight than usual, I reached over to pour myself some. He swatted my hand away and started yelling at me for being a "degenerate drunk". FML

Just out of curiosity, how old are you? No matter what, he's definitely a hypocrite. Sorry!

People saying 'what a hypocrite' or 'drink is obviously a problem in your family' are ridiculous and sanctimonius. The 'degenerate drunk' comment it over the top but not hypocritical, kids who drink underage are more likely to get in trouble than an adult. The OP might say he 'drained' the bottle, but he's (by the sounds of it) a sulky teenager who is sour that his dad won't let him drink underage in public. So he wants to pretend the father is some kind of hypocrite for refusing his kid son an illegal drink, while himself legally drinking a reasonable amount of wine over the course of a few hours and a big meal to prevent bad intoxication A bottle of wine holds 3 or 4 glasses, hardly a lot to drink with a big meal that probably took a couple of hours to order and eat.

Maybe you should ask and say please instead of pouring yourself some...?

well how old are you? if you are under age, he has the right to refuse you alcohol. besides, a few glasses of wine while eating doesnt make the dad drunk, necessairly. the comment might have been a bit much, but if you are under age than whats the problem with him refusing you a drink?

Legal age to drink in public in England is 16, regardless of adult supervision. Legal age to drink at home is 5. No joking.

Ask him to watch himself drink wine in the mirror, and then re-think who the "degenerate drunk" is

A bottle of wine for many is not that much to drink. From the sounds of this FML post, the OP is under age. Why else would they need to wait till dad had, had a few and was "less uptight"? OP got caught doing something they knew was wrong. Chances are they should just shut up and stop being a whiny brat over it. Try just waiting till you are of age to drink or you know....Not drinking with your father and doing so with friends. I have to go with YDI on this.

OP is in the UK, legal drinking age in the UK is generally 18 years old (in Great Britain), and most other countries in Europe do allow drinking in the home

Even so, it sounds like OP was still under the age that UK allows or that the parent is okay with.

Can I just clarify, even tho the legal age at home is 5 in England, I have NEVER heard of, seen, or read about 5 year olds drinking. People don't let their 5 year olds drink just because its legal! In 26 states in America, its legal to have sex with a horse. But has anybody seen people ******* horses? No. Just cause its legal doesn't mean people do it!

My grandfather used to give us all a small glass of champagne for new years, even when we were that young. Only once a year wouldn't be that bad, would it?
