Today, I was grading work my students had done with a sub. I realized one student had gotten hold of the teachers' edition of the textbook when I read ten papers in a row that had "Student answers may vary" as the answer to problem number four. My students can't even cheat properly. FML

Op here. As most teachers will tell you, kids cheat all the time and badly, too. I usually write my own tests and worksheets and only write up answer keys when I need them, which does cut down on cheating. I didn't even realize I had a teacher's edition of the textbook until I came across those answers. On that day I had a family emergency and figured book work practice for an upcoming test would be fine. I did talk to the students involved and their parents. Unfortunately, several of the kids involved are habitual truants and failing my class anyway, so suspension, detention and a zero on the assignment don't mean much to them. A few of the kids involved, though they struggle, do come to class everyday and try, they just made a stupid decision. After a long (and embarrassing for them) talk with me, they (hopefully) have learned a lesson about cheating and blindly following others.

Should write "Teacher grades may vary. See me after class" on all those that attempted to cheat but failed miserably.

Sucks for them! I hope you suspended them or gave them a grade they deserved.

Well the grades didn't vary. Are you sure the textbook was correct?

Maybe meet with each student individually to tell them personally how you feel about cheating.

OP shouldn't have to!! What teacher is okay with cheating?! It's common sense!!

Apparently this teacher has to, since so many of the students tried to cheat.

that's why she should talk to them.

My mom's a teacher and sometimes she allows me to grade, and I ALWAYS find a large some of cheaters, it's sad. If they ever want to learn something they need to do their own work; even if you get some things wrong, at least you can learn from your mistake.

Did you mean a large *sum of cheaters? I hope your mom looks over the work you grade for her.

Haha! Wow! If you're going to cheat at least do it right :p

yeah i think you should be more worried about their basic intelligence than their test scores at this point but punish them of course if theyre going to get caught they need to get in trouble for it

punctuation is not a complete sentence i was a bit rude though sorry about that i just get annoyed when people randomly decide to correct my typing style

It looks like common sense isn't so common anymore. How stupid do you have to be to do that? It's hilarious though! Don't accept the assignment until they do it again on their own.

Wow...no wonder our future seems to be going down the tubes... Well now you know who try's to cheat...

Just tell them that they have been caught cheating, not how you knew so you can catch them cheating again.

Kids these days are given a lot of homework... sometimes its just busy work. Kids need to learn from their homework, not just given something that takes up all their time and leaves no time for play. I mean, they're kids, why should they have to go to school for seven hours then come home to have to do more work? Its really unfair for children who are still developing and need to have free time. Its extra hard for kids to sit down and do a bunch of work. Besides, a lot of time is wasted at school on stupid things. I don't know if these kids had too much homework or not, but I see why they would cheat. But if they're gonna cheat to get their homework done faster, it would help to use their brains a little while doing it. In my opinion, cheating should only be used if you have a bunch of busy work that needs to be done, or if you have to memorize a ton of things. And even then it shouldn't be done in college, of course. I'm not saying people should cheat, but if you do, sometimes it shows great intelligence when someone is able to pull it off in a creative way. Think about it, when you're an adult in work and you have a task to do, your boss isn't gonna sit around to make sure you do it the long hard way. He's gonna give you a deadline and expect you to do it in a time efficient manner. You have to use your brain to figure out the best way to do it.

Lasyasses are lazyasses. They will likely cheat, no matter now little work they have. With you having that attitude about things I hope you get an unimportant job where there's no point in cheating...

Your boss also isn't going to care if he's given you too much work. It's your job to mange your time and come up with a quality result. Copying someone else's work in the real world is going to get you in even more trouble than in school.

Cheating is cheating. The reason why doesn't matter, it's still cheating and not justified or acceptable. Kids not having enough free time to play is bullshit. A lot of the homework can be done at school, it just takes a little discipline.

plus this work was school work, it doesn't sound like it was to be done at home. cheating is never okay and you don't learn anything from it. it's just lazy
