Saxicolous tells us more.
Also, (not enough room to mention this in the FML) it wasn't a casual phone call, she was having a very heated (and obviously fake I realized afterwards) argument with some guy about how she was or was not just at some restaurant with another guy. She was screaming and cussing, the whole shabang! It was, in hindsight, a very effective distraction

How is mouthing to her not interrupting? It's just a quieter way...
Where have I seen this one before...
That bitch planned that shit. Sad I think
Was this at a Payless ShoeSource?
It was not
I thought everyone in Canada was supposed to be nice
The woman need not necessarily be from Canada, maybe she's some vagrant who's also a kleptomaniac.
Okay I'm honestly lost. Can someone illustrate what exactly happened? Did she walk out with the shoes OP was holding?
I had brought her some shoes, and she sent me to the back to get another size. When I came out she was (pretending to be) getting a phone call, she picked it up and started yelling at and fighting with the person on the phone. I stood there for a minute, assuming she would hang up or something, but she didn't, so I mouthed "bigger size" so she could try on the shoes while dealing with her drama. I guess she had tried on the first pair I had brought her and left them on, and when nobody was looking she shoved her (other stolen pair of) shoes into her purse. She said "give me a ******* minute", and then stormed out. I assumed she was just taking the call elsewhere and would be right back, but when she didn't come back I went to put the shoes away and the box was empty. We called security and they told us she had just done this to another store! Voila
Thank you!! Sorry I'm dumb xD
Thank you, OP, for such a clear follow-up on this. There's only so much you can do to prevent theft AND give good customer service. Hope it doesn't come out of your check!
You betcha! And it won't come out of my pay thankfully, but I'll definitely be more aware/suspicious of everybody now
Today, my coworker got fired for stealing from work. Unfortunately they cant prosecute her because there are not enough cameras to prove she did it.
Thanks for the fallow up I'll have to keep this in mind because I don't want people stealing because I'm sure my boss would make it come out of my pay regardless of if it was my fault or not Pretty clever, but really shitty. I wonder how often she does stuff like this, I assume fairly often as she seems to know what she's doing. Sorry you had to deal with it OP

Thieves are really good at what they do. She has probably done this many times. They play on the inherent politeness of people.
You know what they say. "If the shoe fits"
