I'm a 17 year old male, and I yell at my dog and cat all the time. In fact yesterday while my cat was meowing crazily and winding herself around my ankles while I was trying to walk I yelled "WHAT DO YOU WANT?! YOU HAVE FOOD! YOU HAVE WATER! YOU HAVE A CLEAN LITTER BOX! I GAVE YOU ATTENTION! UNLESS THE WORLD IS ABOUT TO COME TO AN END THERE IS NO NEED FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING!" even though I knew perfectly well she couldn't understand me. Or maybe she did know what I was saying and was just doing that to annoy me. It is a CAT after all.

what you are describing here is classed as child abuse, if by a "smack on the side of the head" you meant hit them, then that is illegal. if you had a rough childhood I'm sorry, but that does not give you the. right to take it out on a child.
