Today, I was in the cafeteria when I noticed a new worker cleaning a table. As I passed her, she looked up and smiled at me. Thinking she was pulling a funny face, I jokingly crossed my eyes and smiled back. She looked hurt and continued working. Later, she served me my lunch. She was actually cross-eyed. FML

It's an easy mistake to make. My husband did something similar once. We were at a restaurant, and there was a mentally handicapped teenager sitting in the booth behind my husband, and he's a bit vocal. My husband quietly remarked (Thank God, they didn't hear) about "the kid behind him acting like a retard." I turned pink and quietly corrected him. He made the "Oh shit" face. He's just so used to his immature siblings acting that way, that that's immediately where his mind went. Likewise, if the OP is in an environment where the employees like to joke around and be silly at work (been there), his mind might automatically go to the "she's kidding around" place. Let's face it, cross-eyed people aren't all that common. I don't think I've ever seen a cross-eyed person in real life. In any case, this is clearly a misunderstanding, and I'm sure things can be patched up.

Why don't you just say sorry? About earlier? Did you liked your spit food?
