Today, I was leading a wheelchair fundraiser to raise money to make public areas wheelchair accessible. I had several guest speakers, all of which were confined to wheelchairs. About ten minutes after the fundraiser was supposed to begin, I realized that the stage was wheelchair incompatible. FML

It just proves your point, doesn't it? It sucks that the speakers couldn't get to the stage, but now the entire audience is thinking, "Wow, if only this place was wheelchair compatible...", which should make them more likely to donate money.

Well, showing it's better than just saying it... =)

Dude, I would've so used that to my advantage. Get like, five guys to carry each wheelchair up on stage, then make some speech to the effect of "You see how complicated life is for those in wheelchairs? They didn't ask for this! They deserve better! Donate now!"

I agree with #32 and #33. Sorry. I hope it went well. :)

Agreed that you could have turned it into a demonstration to show how hard things are without the ramps. You could have made a stronger message. But being that this is an FML, I have to assume you didn't. So not only do you fail there, you fail in the initial fact that you forgot a ramp to begin with. Way to be focused on your goals.

Right because OP made a mistake, that must mean they aren't focused at all, despite the fact that they led the fundraiser. It was very sadly ironic, but I don't think you can assume something so broad from one mistake. Oh how so many people don't accept any mistakes...

yes it does. If she is actively trying to make the world wheelchair accessible, then she should notice if her venue isn't. I use a wheelchair and people automatically find out if a place is accessible before we go because they care if I am able to fully participate. it was foolish and lazy.

Dude, I'm a disabled man, and I'm pretty sure that your participants will all take it in stride, probably laugh about it later. Way to fight for disability rights!

Point proven. At my graduation we had a kid in a wheelchair, but the stage wasn't accessible either...had to have the ceremony on the floor.

You could use that into a leader as to exactly WHY more places need to be wheelchair accessible. Seriously, people don't realize the 'little things' that people confined to wheelchairs have to go through b/c people are so ignorant. Ex - in stores? Yeah, there are 'wider' aisles for wheelchairs but that means longer waits in line OR that they have to go ALL THE WAY AROUND when they want to get from point A to point B. Me? I push my wheelchaired friend straight through the smaller aisles nad if shit gets knocked down, at least the staff has something to do instead of standing around laughing and chatting.

yeah exactly #41. yeah, should have thought of that but I understand cause you were very busy with everything else. pretty much sucks. kinda makes you look like an idiot =/ small FML though.
