jfyi, $17 of it went into my tank. i know it was stupid to leave it unattended, i made the post so other morons, like myself, could maybe not do something so stupid. I am fully aware you are not supposed to leave a pump unattended, something i have known for the past 10 years, regardless of the fact that the gas station i was at did not have a single sign stating the obvious(i went back and checked) i was in the gas station maybe 3 minutes at most and i was prepared and willing to pay any clean up fees needed, however the 'specialized' materials this particular attendant used was kitty litter, which she took off of the shelf and opened before going outside. the only reason i feel this would remotely qualify as a FML vs YDI is that i was stupid enough to think a drink was worth leaving my car alone at the time, so really more of a FML for being an idiot type of thing.

that is so not true. this is a lie. it shuts off automatically when the tank is full. cold or not cold. i live in oregon, one of the 2 states where i dont have to pump my own gas and when it was in the negative 20s here, the pumps still shut off. yes, i agree with everyone else who said this was a dumb idea to leave the gas pumping unattended.
ooohman, you are a moron. Please go back to 3rd grade.
Just because it never malfunctioned while you were using does not mean that it's foolproof. I work in a gas station and have seen this exact scenario. On this particular vehicle the gas tank was located under the license plate on the back of the car. The person put in the nozzle and started it, then proceeded to wash the windows. It didn't shut off and gas spilled out, approx. 2-3 gallons worth. Turns out, it spilled because the person did not insert the nozzle fully, thus the shut off did not work. Also, self-service tanks are just that, self-service. The customer is responsible for what happens. As for the clerk shutting off the pump, that is an option of the clerk. We are not required to do it. Any fuel spilled as a result of overfilling the tank is the responsibility of the customer. We do clean it up if it's under 5 gallons, there are specific absorbent materials used. Frankly, the OP deserves paying the extra money for not doing what the warning signs said.
You're an idiot. Someone could have taken the pump out of yours and stole your guys while you were inside. Others of you are also idiots. It DOES only take a minute or two to put gas in your car! maybe you just don't know how to keep track of time effeciently. or, you're just so impatient that you honestly think it takes that long through your own annoyance in waiting. $53 doesn't seem that long. he probably had to wait in line to pay AFTER getting his drink, which takes a couple minutes alone.
Lol! I was thinking the same - someone could've filled up on his money!
$53, even at $3 a gallon, would mean over seventeen gallons of gas on the ground. That's one HUGE puddle. Do you know how far a gallon spreads? BS, unless they called in professionals to come and clean it up. If so, whoever was working at that point would probably be fired for not paying attention to the pumps, and you would have gotten fined for leaving your pump unattended. PS: If anything, the could weather would lead to ice in the nozzle's sensor - which would make the pump shut off after every few cents. I work at a gas station. I know these things.
He could have had a hummer or large vehicle..
OP said "$53 of spilled gas." Let's hope that you're right, though.

Nope, a definite YDI. Nearly every gas station had the don't leave it unattended signs. Not to mention, things have glitches, so I wouldn't trust it to leave it alone, especially since it's pouring a flammable liquid.
YDI. The environment doesn't.
Where I live you have to pay for gas before you pump it, so this would never happen. Maybe you should in Canada.
We pay for gas before we pump here too. Credit (or debit) cards are used at the pumps and it stops when your tank is full. Cash is used inside. The OP was probably using a card.
wtf is wrong with you? you seriously left and went inside? my god,you HAVE to be a woman
I can say for a fact that this is something my father would do. I have seen him start his gas and then follow me into the station to buy a drink. It is not however something I (female) would do. Men can be dangerously stupid.
Wow, what an asshole, you MUST be a man.
I've definitely seen my father do this as well... And guys tend to do more dangerous/stupid stuff than we do. So I second both of the replies to your post :)
its not called "gas" u retarded americans it is petrol or diesel! its not even a ******* gas it is a liquid! YDI for being lazy!!
Haha. We call it gas because it's short for 'gasoline.' Like, you know, petrogasoline.
Yes. Well. Now you know better. Way to hurt the economy and environment, as well as endanger the lives of all the people at the station.

Congratulations OP, now you understand why it is dangerous and illegal to do that.
If you go inside, would it also be easier for people to steal your gas?
