Today, I was pumping gas and decided to go in for a drink. I discovered that when it's cold, sometimes the gas doesn't stop pumping automatically and starts spewing out onto the sidewalk. I had to pay for $53 of spilled gas. FML
I agree, your life sucks 13 900
You deserved it 33 643

dl_zook tells us more.

jfyi, $17 of it went into my tank. i know it was stupid to leave it unattended, i made the post so other morons, like myself, could maybe not do something so stupid. I am fully aware you are not supposed to leave a pump unattended, something i have known for the past 10 years, regardless of the fact that the gas station i was at did not have a single sign stating the obvious(i went back and checked) i was in the gas station maybe 3 minutes at most and i was prepared and willing to pay any clean up fees needed, however the 'specialized' materials this particular attendant used was kitty litter, which she took off of the shelf and opened before going outside. the only reason i feel this would remotely qualify as a FML vs YDI is that i was stupid enough to think a drink was worth leaving my car alone at the time, so really more of a FML for being an idiot type of thing.

Congratulations OP, now you understand why it is dangerous and illegal to do that.

If you go inside, would it also be easier for people to steal your gas?

That has nothing to do with it being cold but rather with the fact that you didn't put the nozzle in your car correctly. It happens quite often here in LA even in the summer. Also that is why you shouldn't leave the pump.

I live in nj and u are allowed to pump ur own gas in a few places. u have to be atleast 16 to drive. o and new joisey is the best state in da world. we r smart be cause idiots leave pumps and nj knows this so they hav people do it for us

ha, if it was my truck, I'd probably have another 60$ to go before I ended up with a mess. YDI !!!!!!

Well, consider yourself lucky. The US government had to pay for billions in spilled oil.

I'm pretty sure there's even a sticker on the pump that says something along the lines of : "never leave pump unattended" or "stand by pump until done"

There are so many things wrong here, and each one ends with the same verdict - YDI. First of all, never leave the pump unattended. Second of all, you left it for the stupid reason of getting a drink, which sounds like you're getting alcohol or beer. Thirdly, if that's the case, you shouldn't be driving, so you deserve paying the extra money for spilled gas.

Temperature wouldn't affect it from disengaging? Sensors inside the nozzle detect when gas splashes back up it.

It says right on the pump in several places that you do NOT leave the pump unattended! YDI every cent of it!

Seriously? You're an idiot for walking away from the pump stop bitching about have to pay for something that was obviously your fault. YDI
