Good thing you're not in the military. You know what happens when we fall asleep on guard duty or firewatch? We get shot.

If you can't stay awake during your shift, you shouldn't be doing it. Especially not when you're a guard. YDI. You still have the job? You wouldn't be the first one to get the boot for falling asleep on duty.

Oh my God, that sucks! As far as OP's falling asleep on the job, that obviously is a problem, but (s)he -- doesn't specify gender -- isn't a soldier or a police officer. If (s)he were I think (s)he would have chugged a little more coffee or otherwise made sure to stay awake, and probably wouldn't have been in a chill enough situation in the first place that (s)he'd be doing paperwork in the car. (Not to mention that the boss' coming to the window in a Halloween mask says something about the kind of work environment this is.) I'm not disparaging security guards or saying that their work isn't valuable or difficult. My mom worked as one for most of my childhood, so I know it is. But if this was just a one-time incidence of nodding off in the deserted parking lot of a suburban Wal-Mart, I think getting pepper sprayed is more than punishment enough.
