Today, I went on a hike with friends, but as I'm the worst outdoorsperson because I rarely venture outside of the city, I ended up getting lost in some woods after straying from our group. I ended up having to call 911 to be rescued. My friends will absolutely not let me live this ordeal down. FML

Today, I went on a hiking date with my significant other. Trying to be adventurous and assertive, I suggested we take a shortcut through the woods. We got hopelessly lost and ended up spending the night in a deserted ranger station. Turns out, my idea of adventure is not quite as romantic as it sounds. FML

Today, I went on a scenic hike to clear my head and ended up lost for two hours. When I finally found my way back, I noticed the trail signs had big, bright arrows. How did I miss those? FML

Today, I went on a relaxing nature hike to de-stress. I got lost for hours, encountered a bear, and had to play dead, only for the bear to steal my sandwich then sit there for hours before finally leaving. FML

Today, I tried taking a shortcut through a nature trail, hoping to save myself some time getting back to my car. I ended up getting lost for nearly 3 hours and getting to work nearly 2 hours late. FML

Today, I told my mom I was going hiking with a couple of friends and wouldn't be back for four or more hours. Not even two hours later, she called the cops and reported us as missing. She didn't realize that we wouldn't have service up the canyon so we could call her back. FML

Today, I lost my phone during a hike up Mount Washington. Luckily, it was reported to the office, and they called my wife. Too bad we had already been driving for at least four hours. FML

Today, I had my first real break from work in ages, so I decided to go hiking. Less than 20 minutes in, I tumbled a couple hundred feet down a steep hill, broke my leg and several toes, and lay there in agony for an eternity before I was finally rescued. FML

Today, my family and I went on a hike to a local abandoned gold mine, with the hopes of being able to explore the caves. What we didn't expect was four miles of treacherous, rocky, near vertical trails that led to the mine. Once we finally got there, exhausted, it was blocked off for safety reasons. FML

Today, I went hiking with my family. A local had told us about the trail, saying the two mile walk would lead us to a seventy-foot waterfall. After seven miles of trekking in the sweltering sun with no food, we finally found the waterfall. It was barely ten feet tall. FML

Don't join the search team if you don't know what you're doing! you could have made it that much harder on everyone else by getting lost along with whoever y'all were searching for in the first place.

getting lost in the woods is fun, one time a friend of mine insisted that he knew a shortcut to the parking lot when we were hiking. Along the normal path it would have been 30min more. So we took the shortcut and had an awesome 4 hours of aimless wandering around. The woods are the best off the trail since thats where you find the really nice spots and scenic views of nature. It can be dangerous, but it sure is purdy!

SAR groups are much less effective if they have to spend time seaching for their own members rather than rescuing the lost people

If you had followed the rules, at the very least, you would have had a buddy to be lost with and a radio to call your group leader. And thats just for a regular SAR team hike. Alot more goes into actual search and rescue

I don't think you wandered off as much as your Search and Rescue group ditched you. I'd ditch you, too-- wouldn't have time to look for idiots like you rather than someone who really did need to be searched for and rescued. Are you five? Remember the buddy-system.
